Transfiguration, the Mystic’s Initiation

Transfiguration is defined as a marked change in form or appearance; a metamorphosis, a change that glorifies or exalts. To transfigure is defined as to elevate, glorify, idealize or spiritualize.—OED. Trans- is a prefix occurring in loanwords from Latin (transcend; transfigure); on this model, used with the meanings across, beyond, through, changing thoroughly, transverse, in combination with elements of any origin.

The Transfiguration refers to the sudden emanation of radiance from the person of Jesus that occurred on the mountain; it is the Roman Catholic feast commemorating this event observed on August 6 and, on August 19 in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Transfiguration is the initiation of the fourth Degree of the Mystic. During Transfiguration, you stand in the golden silence to maintain constant contact with the Source, and name all things Good. When you balance Love and Wisdom perfectly, to stand in balance under the pure white Light of the Christ, the materiality of self falls from your soul and your face shines as pure joy.

Edna Lister on Transfiguration

You must love enough, so much so that you stand at last on the Mount of Transfiguration, glistering and white.—Edna Lister, Jesus, the Lawyer, July 20, 1941.

As you ascend, your soul substance sloughs a heavy, oily coating. On the Mount of Transfiguration, Jesus sloughed his heavy body and stood in his atomic body. Atomic substance is under control of the will. To heal your physical, you raise the vibration and expand the substance.—Edna Lister, May 18, 1947.

You cannot beg, buy or borrow Transfiguration. You must become it.—Edna Lister, October 23, 1952.

Jesus glistered during his transfiguration because the Father invested His full radiance in him. The Light shone from within, penetrating his clothing. How was this possible? Jesus had so completely surrendered to be used that he drew in his life sparks and walked in his atomic fire body.—Edna Lister, Surrender and Transfiguration, July 12, 1953.

Love is Transfiguration.—Edna Lister, Surrender and Transfiguration, July 12, 1953.

Gritty pride wears and tears on the desire body activity, and is very difficult to transfigure.—Edna Lister, July 13, 1953.

Spirit begins to shine through you when you step onto the Mount of Transfiguration. To fulfill the law of Transfiguration, you must stand in the golden silence while maintaining constant contact with the Source.—Edna Lister, July 13, 1953.

When you pass a new initiation, which is merely leaving more of the "little self" behind forever, you actually change your body. Every time you express a Godlike quality of soul instead of a self-centered desire, a bit of your soul substance sheds its oily coating so you may draw the life sparks into the next higher body. Thus, you draw a few life sparks from the atomic mental body and incorporate them into the Oversoul itself. Then you draw from the molecular desire body into the mental body, and best of all, from the physical organs into the desire body. Nothing apparent happens to the physical body or its outer appearance. It looks the same, but as this transfiguring ascension continues, one day you will walk in a beautifully light body, that is higher in vibration and immune to physical diseases.—Edna Lister, July 13, 1953.

Rebirth, transformation and transfiguration are the three steps to Ascension. Transfiguration is knowing, just knowing that God as love is. Love’s answer is always yes. Love is perfection, and when love moves in, it brings only perfection. When you transfigure the inner emotional life, when you surrender the mental life to the Mind of God, calling all good, then love can do the work.—Edna Lister, From Surrender to Ascension, January 15, 1954.

Jesus could walk on water because he had withdrawn his life sparks to his atomic mental body; he could walk on clouds in this vaporous body.—Edna Lister, June 22, 1954.

Anyone can sublimate, transform, and transfigure himself into his molecular, atomic, or electronic body.—Edna Lister, July 6, 1954.

You cannot do much about worldly troubles except to ascend your Mount of Transfiguration, which is just one step up in consciousness. The greatest task is to climb the Mount; God does the rest of the work using you. Beyond the Mount of Transfiguration is an abyss, so think well; it means climbing to the top or falling to the bottom.—Edna Lister, Heavenly Manna, August 14, 1955.

"This is good! Let there be Light!": No matter how long it takes, your prayers will transfigure invisible substance. It works faster when you are on fire with desire to ascend.—Edna Lister, April 4, 1957.

Jesus was living in his electronic body on the Mount of Transfiguration. He had raised the vibration of his body cells from water to the steam or vapor state, which is a definition of mundane transfiguration. His bloodstream was the only earthy element remaining in his body. When they pierced his hands, feet and side while he was on the cross, his blood drained onto the ground, thus beginning the transfiguration of earth.—Edna Lister, Conquering Space, October 15, 1957.

After the Mount of Transfiguration, Mind held Jesus in his electronic body. Most metaphysicians stop at Resurrection, because they persist in using Power, not surrendering to it. Only selfless surrender of appetitive soul to be the servant of all Power can do what Jesus did. If you do not surrender self, you strike your own soul barrier, like the sonic barrier, and cannot ascend higher.—Edna Lister, August 7, 1958.

On the Mount of Transfiguration, soak yourself in Light to hold your place atop the River of Life. To reach transfiguration, you must ascend above the River of Life as it flows for the masses. If you step into the turbulence of the river, earth slows you until you shake with an inner conflict called nervousness. It is a sign that both feet are up to the ankles in the river of the world masses.—Edna Lister, December 1, 1958.

It is possible to be transfigured and still live in the flesh through the surrender of self in ascension.—Edna Lister, March 26, 1959.

Under Transfiguration, the Mystic stands in the golden silence, maintains a constant contact with the Source and names all things good and very good. The materiality of self falls from the soul and his face shines as pure joy.—Edna Lister, The Pioneering Mystic, May 5, 1959.

Whenever you pray as a Mystic, you transfigure your physical cells. The desire body is composed of molecules and holds seven chakras. The atomic mental body holds forty-four lotus centers, and the electronic fire body holds seven sun centers. By activating them with enough Light, you can renew every cell of your body in a week. The Mystic initiation is Transfiguration from self to soul, raising the vibratory rate of balance of the coarse, physical substance to the inner, radiant electronic fire body. To practice transfiguration, breathe yourself straight into your body each morning to align your desire body over your physical body, part for part. Then you can more easily contact your Oversoul to draw Light as energy from your fire body for perfect health.—Edna Lister, Transfiguration, Resurrection and Ascension, May 19, 1959.

By using self-control without surrendering self, you eventually crystallize any emotion that you do not transfigure by conquering it. As you transfigure your life, you resurrect all the old and open new brain cells.—Edna Lister, Transfiguration, Resurrection and Ascension, May 19, 1959.

When you thirst enough for the law of God, you will ascend the Mount of Transfiguration.—Edna Lister, Jesus’ Seven Last Words, June 7, 1959.

You transfigure yourself under service to God only.—Edna Lister, Eight Great Powers of Being, June 23, 1959.

The glory of serving God and man transforms you; by giving outer mundane service, you are endowed with Light as it possesses you. The Mount of Transfiguration is but becoming an agent of the Shekinah glory, one step at a time upward.—Edna Lister, December 18, 1959.

All progress from the cocoon of self is based on transformation and transfiguration from selfish irresponsibility to full soul accountability. You can be transformed from anything to something else. When you have grown wings and emerged, you have achieved Transfiguration. Stand on the Mount of Transfiguration and your soul’s work manager takes over, saying, Follow your path through the Gates of Light. When you live by the tenet of honor above all, Light transfigures you from the cocoon of self.—Edna Lister, Steadfastness Through Vigilance, June 19, 1960.

Even your appearance is transfigured when you honor your responsibility to God.—Edna Lister, Steadfastness Through Vigilance, June 19, 1960.

It is fitting and important to hold your self in complete surrender of devotion, faithful consecration, and in dedication to be used by the Power. You can prepare for the great work of full Transfiguration that lies ahead only in this way.—Edna Lister, July 20, 1960.

Transfiguration is but a step from where you may see clearly and hear divinely. Caution: Check every step on the way, for this is the dangerous part of unfoldment, the borderline where you part the seventh veil of illusion. At this point, stand, hold, love, and know that nothing can go wrong or disturb you when you love enough.—Edna Lister, July 20, 1960.

Always screen your impulse to react by comparing it to the Master standing on the Mount of Transfiguration.—Edna Lister, January 12, 1961.

As you arrive at the point of Transfiguration, you automatically make a just appraisal of your life and you know that you can afford to lose the useless husks of self. You may feel lonely as you step onto the path of destiny in returning to God, but you feel you simply must express the seed of divine life within you to go home to God. Persist, or fear blocks God’s divine plan for your life. You have developed selfish habit patterns through countless lives, all rooted in instinctive intelligence. Now you must conquer them and replace them wit the right mental faculties and thinking powers—logic, reason, discernment, discrimination and discretion, comparison, induction, the five senses, deduction and synthesis—to ascend from the creature stage of appetitive soul.

Transfiguration is simply comparison with the Master: Declare, I am following the Lord Jesus Christ until I am as perfect as my Father in heaven is perfect. Then you stop inducting from the five senses and direct them upward through purified mental processes and soul enables you to see and eliminate your old habit patterns in your soul record.—Edna Lister, October 22, 1961.

If you once let yourself look as though you’ve been to the Mount of Transfiguration, your family will expect you to continue to be perfect.—Edna Lister, Whither Thou Goest, October 22, 1961.

Transfiguration is that perfect moment of knowing the Truth.—Edna Lister, Heaven, a Place to Fill, April 10, 1962.

The whole world is under the laws of transformation; truth elevates transformation to Transfiguration. The I AM consciousness accepts, reaches up to contact God’s desire to give, and the result is a burst of illumination. Your whole life is transfigured, as was Jesus’ on the Mount of Transfiguration. Under Transfiguration, you step from the fate line onto your Path of Destiny. As you change selfish indifference into a burning soul desire, you are transfigured by your cosmic victory, and all Power moves through you. When you become transfigured into the full stature of the Christed consciousness, you may expect miracle after miracle, your creations visible and perfect.—Edna Lister, Your Contact With Cosmic Consciousness, September 7, 1962.

Transfiguration comes when the cells of the body itself are permeated with the life, joy, faith and love of God.—Edna Lister, November 16, 1962.

Power to transfigure: Your birthright is to partake of everything the Father has. You either know it or do not. Wherever you are imperfect, you have God and. When you think of God as your eyes, you say, Let my eyes be healed to be as perfect as Your eyes, Father. The eyes are not yours if God is your eyes. They belong to God. This is your inheritance. God's eternal Power has never changed, but your attitude toward it must.

Me, my and mine are selfish metaphysical curses that evict God from His realm of IS-ness and wholeness of being. To question any one else's health attaches their negative to you. Dedicate any physical negativity to the Father’s use. Father, I dedicate these eyes, this head cold, to Thee for Thy use. To use them, God perfects them. What God uses is His.—Edna Lister, December 17, 1962.

The prefix trans- means to change completely. To transfigure spiritually means to change to a higher rate of vibration: earth, water, air, fire. This is the only means of transfiguring your body.—Edna Lister, December 17, 1962.

Transfiguration is only a way-station, a rest stop on the Via Christa.—Edna Lister, December 8, 1963.

Transfiguration is an initiation and many initiations. To transfigure means to change the form of your character and personality expression, or to change form in outer manifestation.—Edna Lister, Shekinah Splendor, December 15, 1963.

Every mystical illumination is an initiation to ascend the Mount of Transfiguration; the first step is fulfilling all your personal responsibilities.—Edna Lister, Shekinah Splendor, December 15, 1963.

Remember that there is no death, only transfiguration. Declare it good. Thou art now made anew, transfigured, transformed into good.—Edna Lister, November 30, 1964.

When you practice attention to details in all its ramifications, it leads you to great transfiguration. You are in charge of your own transfiguration, so begin with praise, prayer, gratitude and singing.—Edna Lister, November 30, 1964.

Hold fast to the mental image of the Master on the Mount of Transfiguration to heal yourself or anyone else. Also, see a vision of the Master before a person who has angered you; then you can’t be too severe in dealing with him.—Edna Lister, December 17, 1964.

There is no easy-going way of Transfiguration; it must be a constant, steadfast awareness of God.—Edna Lister, January 31, 1965.

Truth’s guardians have always clothed its mysteries in allegories and metaphors with hidden meaning. God sent the children of Israel to Egypt to receive instruction in the mysteries, which were then held there, protected. Moses was a thoroughly instructed initiate, ready for his Transfiguration. Yet he had to earn it.—Edna Lister, Ancient Myths and Mysteries, May 11, 1965.

Human consciousness must rise from the animal constitution or ascend from the four elements, earth, water, air and fire. Each soul must ascend through all stages of man-created evil to the Mount of Transfiguration just as Jesus did.—Edna Lister, May 13, 1965.

The first set of 33 Via Christa Degrees is uneven and hard, but God tempers the wind to the shorn lamb.—Laurence Sterne. The second set of degrees seems a bit smoother; the third set really begins the resurrection of all soul abilities to climb the Mount of Transfiguration. It is a rocky way, with many pitfalls, and three abysses that you must cross.—Edna Lister, May 14, 1965.

To achieve the final Transfiguration you must remain on your Mount of Transfiguration continuously, allowing nothing to splatter or touch you with an earth vibration that pulls downward.—Edna Lister, July 20, 1965.

After the Baptism by Fire comes a transformation of your attitudes, then the Transfiguration of your being. Stand on your Mount of Transfiguration, where all is perfect, and the world will follow. Never descend from the Mount while you are working out your salvation within each problem life presents.—Edna Lister, July 31, 1965.

Mortality operates under the laws of emergence, maturity, and decline. Immortality works under the laws of transmutation, transfiguration, and ascension. Under emergence, you come forth; under maturity, you develop; in decline, you fade away. To transmute or transform means that you change from one state or form into another. When you transfigure, you become shining. When you ascend, you move higher in consciousness and vibration.

The first step in transformation is, What is that to thee? Follow thou me.—John 21:22. This means to mind your own business. Leave everyone else to be where they choose, in their own grades. Life is a school, with grades. When another wants the last word, give him the first word. This immediately stops inner conflicts and removes blocks.

The second step is Transfiguration through Agree with thine adversary quickly.—Matthew 5:25. When you face a so-called adversary, you are being called to initiate a new non-angry, non-self-defensive way of being. By agreeing wit the situation (not vinewing the person as your adversary), you can use your creative tools of desire (emotions), thinking and imagination perfectly. Waste no time paying another's debts with your own criticism, blame and resentment, for that causes you to take on their debts. In the face of the worst criticism, ask questions. No matter how outrageous their response, you can always say something like Really? Well, I can see how you think that. Have you ever thought of thus and so?

This approach leads to the third step of Ascension in which you become balanced and open to receive illumination from above. Be interested in everyone! Criticism leaves you in rebellious rejection, holding an umbrella that sheds the illumination that can pour out as a miracle of healing.—Edna Lister, September 19, 1965.

Light is transforming you into your original image and likeness of God and transfigures you.—Edna Lister, October 20, 1966.

Transfiguration is ascending and descending in Light.—Edna Lister, Your Mount of Transfiguration, October 30, 1966.

Treatments and Declarations for Transfiguration

Reach up into the Light and declare that you walk in a transfigured body now. When you ache, say, Let this transfiguration be finished, completed and fulfilled now. You may make this statement silently for others.—Edna Lister, May 18, 1959.

Declare aloud, Let my Christed Age sheath come forth. Let my whole desire body now move forth into visibility with the strength of God possessing it every moment and for every need to function in all perfection and in all beauty. Let this transfiguration come to pass speedily. I walk in a transfigured body now. Let the transfiguration be finished, completed and fulfilled now, as of this moment. When you declare this for another, use his name —Edna Lister, May 19, 1959.

I now declare that my new truth of the Power of God moves into action to fulfill all my dreams. I begin to transform my life. I move up in consciousness to my Mount of Transfiguration, where Power does the work, where all my projects are vitalized and quickened with the renewing, rebuilding glory of the Power of God.—Edna Lister, February 2, 1965.

Edna Lister on the Transfiguration of Christ

From the Mount of Transfiguration until the Resurrection, Jesus had lived in his atomic mental body, held in physical form by Mind, as all Adepts may hold form.—Edna Lister, Good Friday, March 31, 1956.

Jesus is our ensample of Transfiguration, Resurrection and Ascension. Transfiguration is the Mystic Degree initiation. When Jesus was transfigured, he recalled and integrated his experiences as Moses and Elijah. A catalyst brings together two different substances and transfigures them into a new, common substance, which is a mediator, the vibratory rate of balance between the visible and invisible worlds.

Transfiguration raises the vibratory rate of balance of physical cells from the coarser material to the radiant electronic fire body. The Oversoul descends in the fire body under Transfiguration, causing the outer sheath to glister with the white Light of the Christ. Jesus had often disappeared (called translation) but his Transfiguration was the vibration from his fire body shining through his outer physical sheath. All materiality fell from him. His face glistered with the Light from within, visible and brilliant as the sun, even his clothes shone.

You do not instantly transfigure yourself completely but a bit at a time. Every time you pray as a Mystic, you transfigure a little. Practice transfiguration; breathe yourself straight into your body each morning to align your desire body over your physical body, part for part, then you can contact your Oversoul, which sends Power from your fire body for perfect health.—Edna Lister, Transfiguration, Resurrection and Ascension, May 19, 1959.

Einstein’s "mass-to-energy" theory explains the resurrection of Jesus’ body. On the Mount of Transfiguration, he showed Peter, James and John that he could raise his mass body through successive energy states, into Light. Every healing is a resurrection from "mass," heavy body substance, into energy.—Edna Lister, Healing by Principle, July 12, 1959.

Read the accounts in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke to understand the meaning of the Mount of Transfiguration.—Edna Lister, The Greater Mystery, Your Inner Eye, December 8, 1963.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.—John 1:14.

We have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.—2 Peter 1:16-18.

Matthew’s Account of the Transfiguration: Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, and was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.

And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only. And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead. And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.—Matthew 17:1-13.

Mark’s Account: Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them. And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them. And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid. And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.

And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead. And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean. And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come? And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought. But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.—Mark 9:2-13.

Luke’s Account: [Jesus] took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.—Luke 9:28-36.

Moses’ Transfiguration: And [Moses] was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him. And Moses called unto them; and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned unto him: and Moses talked with them. And afterward all the children of Israel came nigh: and he gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him in mount Sinai. And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face. But when Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded. And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.—Exodus 34:28-35.

Elijah and Elisha: Prototypes of Transfiguration From Adept to Master: And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel. And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho. And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the Lord hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on. And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.

And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground. And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so. And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces. He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan; and he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over. And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.—2 Kings 2:1-15.

Etymology of transfigure: Latin transfigurare, "change the shape of," from trans- "across" + figurare "to form, fashion," from figura, "form, shape."

Transfiguration is an initiation.

As brightest sun, His face is bright;
His raiment, as the light, is white,
Yea, whiter than the whitest snow.
Moses, Elias, spake with Him.
Of deepest things, of terrors grim,
Of boundless bliss, and boundless woe,
Of pangs that none but Christ may know.

A voice sublime I panting hear,
A voice that conquers grief and fear,
Revealing all eternity;
Revealing God’s beloved Son,
Born to redeem a world undone;
Filled with God’s fulness from on high,
To gain God’s noblest victory.
