Ascension, the Christos Initiation

Webster's 1828 Dictionary defines ascend as "to move upwards; to mount; to go up; to rise, whether in air or water, or upon a material object. To rise, in a figurative sense; to proceed from an inferior to a superior degree, from mean to noble objects, from particulars to generals, etc. To proceed from modern to ancient times; to recur to former ages; as, our inquiries ascend to the remotest antiquity. In a corresponding sense, to proceed in a line towards ancestors; as, to ascend to our first progenitors. To rise as a star; to proceed or come above the horizon. In music, to rise in vocal utterance; to pass from any note to one more acute." Ascend also means "to go or move upwards upon, as to ascend a hill or ladder; or to climb." Ascension is "the act of ascending; a rising. It is frequently applied to the visible elevation of our Savior to Heaven."

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, to ascend means "to rise from the inferior to the superior, advancement in thought or feeling, in station, dignity, or estimation; to go or come up by a gradual motion to a relatively higher position; to climb up, travel up, to soar, mount, to rise by process of growth or construction, to be raised or reared, to proceed from the inferior to the superior; to rise in thought, degree of characteristic quality."

To ascend, you walk the Way of the Christ, the Via Christa, which is the initiatory Path of Ascension of consciousness to become as perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect. The Via Christa is the way of complete ascension of body, heart, mind, soul and spirit to attain the high tower fortress of Ascension in the Garden of Eden, where you live by the precepts of soul. You then live by pure illumination, and the final, complete soul conquering of self.

Soul ascension is a continually growing consciousness and awareness, a continually increasing rate of vibration and a continually expanding aura, which you achieve by sacrificing the little self of the appetitive soul, surrendering all self to God, the Father of All. Ascension is an absolute principle: God's entire Creation is ascending to become one with Him. Ascension is an abstract principle, a law of being, a law of doing, a degree, and the Christos initiation. All laws are laws of ascension.

Your ascension begins the moment you decide to return to the Source. So, your Christing begins as your Oversoul descends to enfold the outer physical sheath. You agree with God that "This is good" (Genesis 1), and adjust to others without arguing. The third step of ascension is balance in preparation, devotion and action. Balance is poise and equilibrium in your service. Holding your balance is easier when you always ask, "What is that to thee? Follow thou me." – John 21:22. – Edna Lister, Pentecost, the Way of Ascension, May 7, 1950.

Number 1, the creative principle, must forever multiply and increase. Number 2, the transmutative principle, must forever change its form. Number 3, the expressive principle, must forever pour forth and press forth. Number 4, the service principle, must forever serve (as the process of) creation, transmutation and expression. For example, Spirit expressing through form must forever evolve and ascend as higher perfected personal expression. – Edna Lister, Is it Right to Ask for Myself? June 14, 1960.

To refuse to let people move you into false attitudes is a first step in Ascension. A false attitude is anything that causes you to forget your standing with God. – Edna Lister, June 27, 1960.

The law of continuing sacrifice: When you ascend under a high sacrifice of self, you always face another choice of the way to go: The first choice is to hold that high point of contemplation, this full illumination, despite anything. The other choice is to want credit for saintly self-sacrifice, and so sink into the morass and quicksand of self-pity, frustration and that hopeless attitude of "What's the use? It isn't my fault. They can't blame me." When you make a high sacrifice, they invite you to step onto the Via Christa, the Path of Destiny, to forget self. To deny your choice with even a tinge of self, you fall back into the abyss where the path of fate travels. – Edna Lister, January 29, 1961.

That which had no weight after you pass an initiation, becomes a weight as you ascend. – Edna Lister, June 9, 1961.

From the annunciation to his ascension, Jesus the Christ unfolds the true way for conquering self. – Edna Lister, The First Church of Revelation, October 3, 1961.

Each plays the game of self alone; we all play the game of soul ascension as one. – Edna Lister, October 16, 1961.

The capacity of your love and compassion determines your ascension. – Edna Lister, December 17, 1961.

You cannot walk the Path of Ascension with a pin point's worth of intolerance or blame. – Edna Lister, January 4, 1962.

Ascension is so difficult because you must enfold personal will into wisdom, which means that you must first accept your accountability for all the divine Mind, Power and Substance you have used while on earth. – Edna Lister, Christ Shall Reign, March 12, 1962.

To accept lovingly, without rancor or hurt, is the true attitude of the ascending soul. To stand and say, "Father, I accept; I lift and cover the transgressions of others," is the way of all-mighty, all-powerful and all-glorious ascension. – Edna Lister, Heaven Is a State of Consciousness, April 3, 1962.

Under ascension, you don't pass a grade and graduate; you meet the temptations of the Seven Degrees from Neophyte to Christos daily. – Edna Lister, Heaven Is a Place to Fill, April 10, 1962.

You must lift all taints of grief before the world may ascend. – Edna Lister, April 12, 1962.

Ascend from "existence" to the Life of God, where you live, move and have your being. – Edna Lister, May 20, 1962.

The only thing difficult in ascension is thinking about it. The doing is not hard. It is just an act of soul freedom to surrender self. – Edna Lister, June 7, 1962.

Every vibration must either ascend or descend after "three days" (the time it takes to change a vibration from one rate to another) and "getting understanding" is a process involving both obedience and forgiveness. – Edna Lister, November 14, 1962.

You cannot spiritually see or hear until you ascend the emotional life. – Edna Lister, December 17, 1962.

When you fall from ascension, the Power that burns up the dross may turn and burn out the body. – Edna Lister, January 10, 1963.

The voice is the final portion of the physical body to be ascended. – Edna Lister, January 29, 1963.

You ascend just as far as your surrender, obedience and devotion take you; you ascend as high as you can, but never reach the ultimate because, as soon as you think you have surrendered, you form a block. – Edna Lister, February 27, 1963.

Full consideration is one of the greatest ascension laws; it lifts you above the petty ways of inconsideration. – Edna Lister, April 4, 1963.

Ascension is living one hundred percent by God's possibilities. – Edna Lister, Earth's Earliest Ages, June 11, 1963.

The entire process of ascension is sacrificing sovereignty of self for sovereignty of soul. – Edna Lister, Earth's Earliest Ages, June 11, 1963.

Your stairway or ladder of ascension is solid only if your giving up of self is lavish and free. – Edna Lister, The Cross, June 23, 1963.

Ascension is a consciousness of radiance greater than anything on earth. Faithfulness to principle counts as ascension credits. Not all credits deal with ascension. A demerit is lost, not only as an ascension credit, but according to the demerit's weight, it may subtract from the stored ascension credits. When you are climbing in ascension, each demerit is a weight on the soul pulling backward and downward.

It takes flaming, burning desire to ascend to the heights. Waste no time in vain repetition that could be better spent in reaching the top. Too many reach this point only to slip back into self. Make every effort to pull your feet from the quicksand of self and run higher into the Light. – Edna Lister, July 5, 1963.

Ascension is a level of spiritual consciousness, an established comprehension of principle, rising through the world mind to consciousness where nothing can shake you, the soul climbing to establish identity with God the Source. – Edna Lister, The Crown of Thorns, July 7, 1963.

As you walk the Path of Ascension, you may not take in any personal disturbance, hate or anger toward another; you may not recognize anything that disturbs, for to you, it is not there. – Edna Lister, July 8, 1963.

One of the first necessities of the ascending soul is to absolutely conquer arrogance and pride, yet to stand proudly, giving not an inch on principle. – Edna Lister, July 17, 1963.

You ascend on the inner only as you ascend on the outer. – Edna Lister, July 21, 1963.

Law of breath: Breath is our main instrument by which to ascend. You can breathe looking upward or looking down. The physical breath contains seven degrees of breath, but the structure is unconscious. Where you are in consciousness depends on which breath you are functioning. – Edna Lister, September 14, 1963.

The Zodiacal Wheel becomes your ladder of ascension as you conquer on the virtues of the twelve signs. – Edna Lister, September 14, 1963.

Complete ascension to God is the most important part of your work. – Edna Lister, November 17, 1963.

You orient your ascension work toward God and heaven as a place; if you are disoriented with heaven, you are disoriented toward your daily life. – Edna Lister, You Are a Seer and a Prophet, December 17, 1963.

Ascension is the unfoldment of your potentialities. – Edna Lister, The Sword, Your Flaming Scepter of Power, April 19, 1964.

To ascend in consciousness requires effort and hard work — if you earn half a credit, you receive half an idea, a dream or a vision. – Edna Lister, June 28, 1964.

It is the privilege of any who grows weary of ascension to linger where he stops; without desire to ascend, he must, by the law, regress and forget what he had. At transition, death of the body, Council will show him his neglected work, and the penalty of regression, which is to repeat, from the beginning, the initiation that he laid aside. This is universal law, and may not be set aside for any. – Edna Lister, July 26, 1964.

To accept keeps us alert to fulfill the details of life and law. Not to accept dulls all fine perceptive abilities, and closes sensitivity to law; no ascension is possible. – Edna Lister, July 28, 1964.

You expand on the inner according to your ascension here in daily living. Every time you miss the mark here, you shrink there, thus delaying your inner ascension and physical perfection. – Edna Lister, September 20, 1964.

The ascension of finite beings — all mankind — is possible because of the qualified and unqualified absolutes, which are perfectly and divinely unified by the universal absolute. The unqualified absolute is impersonal, extra-divine and undeified principle. The qualified absolute is relative in nature, manifesting various aspects of personality.

The universal absolute perfectly equalizes the tensions between time and eternity, finitude and infinity, reality potential and reality actualization, and humanity and God. In final comprehension all three are one absolute. On finite levels they are functionally differentiated, but in infinity they are one. – Edna Lister, The Spirit and Mystery of God as Unity, Duality, Trinity, November 17, 1964.

Ascension is a consciousness of radiance greater than anything on earth. – Edna Lister, December 11, 1964.

The soul can only ascend or regress. Ascension is joy, a joy in assuming more life. – Edna Lister, January 27, 1965.

Man must ascend through and overcome all stages of created evil to reach the Mount of Transfiguration. – Edna Lister, May 13, 1965.

Immortality works under the laws of transmutation, transfiguration, and ascension: Under transmutation, you change from one state or form into another, under transfiguration, you become shining, in ascension, you climb higher. – Edna Lister, You Are Immortal Now, September 19, 1965.

Soul ascension is your work, for the soul to direct and control the life of the body. Many teachers teach resurrection, but the world needs more teachers of ascension. Anyone who says to be good and to lift self, is teaching ascension. – Edna Lister, Number, the Spoken Word, November 23, 1965.

You are in your own place, the place you have earned, and when you accept this, you are on the Path of Ascension. – Edna Lister, Truth as Practical Common Sense, November 28, 1965.

When you expand your consciousness, you ascend; when you ascend, you see. – Edna Lister, March 13, 1966.

You can experience dizzy spells in going from the mundane world to the inner because our ascension releases a lightning-like bolt of Power; you must climb by easy stages and consider outer events. – Edna Lister, April 25, 1966.

This final ascension over life and death is your own power over desire and imagination. – Edna Lister, Eight Great Powers of Being, October 25, 1966.

The attainment of Light and perfect expression comes through obedience, surrender and ascension. – Edna Lister, The First Seven Magnitudes, November 8, 1966.

All ascension (future growth) depends on the maturity that comes from bringing the past cleared, purged experiences up to now, thus freeing the soul to penetrate deeper into the unknown or veiled future. You cannot drag the past with you, only the strength gained. – Edna Lister, The Future of the Ascending Supreme, October 31, 1967.

Our Bible textbook basis for ascension is found in the Gospel of Luke: "He led them out as far as Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven." – Luke 24:50-51. For us, ascension becomes a simple art of moving up in consciousness by the practice of letting go of the old ways, and by obeying the following five important laws found in the Master's teachings.

"Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven and all else shall be added unto thee." – Matthew 6:33.
"Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him." – Matthew 5:25.
"What is that to thee? Follow thou me." – John 21:22.
"Abstain from all appearance of evil." – 1 Thessalonians 5:22.
"I, if I be lifted up from the earth, shall draw all men unto me." – John 12:32.
– Edna Lister, Five Important Steps in Ascension, 1968.

Ascension is not moving away from life, but moving into life eternal and immortal. – Edna Lister, June 28, 1968.

The attitude of an ascending soul should always be that of acceptance and surrender. – Edna Lister, August 1, 1968.

You ascend every time you have high thoughts or do good deeds. Ascension means accepting responsibility and letting others see something of the Father in you. – Edna Lister, Five Important Mysteries, October 27, 1968.

The whole purpose of life is to ascend. Ascension is earth's final high initiation. – Edna Lister, Your Mount of Transfiguration, December 2, 1968.

Treatments for Ascension

How to ascend for tests: 1. Remember that all Light comes from above. 2. Information is drawn overhead like a cloud, so the answers you need are drawn ahead of you. 3. Make your mind a mirror to see the answer in divine Mind with your mind's eye. 4. Receive it under illumination and intuition. You cannot think the answer. – Edna Lister, June 7, 1950.

Some try to ascend while pushing fourteen pounds per square inch of pressure ahead of them. You build inner pressure when you are hurt or resentful. If grief weighs fourteen pounds per square inch, how many pounds will you breed in hatred and resentment? Take a deep breath — the pressure separates and you walk through. – Edna Lister, To Seek the Light, June 10, 1951.

Mankind Shall Ascend

Edna Lister created this sermon outline for March 21, 1937, Buffalo, New York. Scriptures: John 3:11-15, John 6:53-68.

"Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life." – John 3:11-15.

"Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum. Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it? When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you? What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life." – John 6:53-68.

The timing of this scripture is set at the point where Jesus was closing his remarkable 3.5-year ministry. His self-professed enemies had never caught him in any mesh or weaving they created to entrap him. He always knew who he was, and what his destiny included. He set the pattern of ascension, the style of living spiritually forever. For 2,000 years, man has striven to understand the scope of living in Christ.

The Christed pattern is receptive, flexible and balanced. To be receptive is to remain open-minded. To be flexible is not to break, but to bend under pressure. To be balanced is not to criticize unjustly or to weakly submit to be criticized. The "son of man" describes the form of the self. The "son of God" represents the soul, which is like the Father. The soul uses the terms "I, me," and "I am" to represent your God-likeness.

The world is a constant push-pull dynamic. The world pushes at you while the Light pulls you up into itself. Light pulls at the seed of life in everything. Trees, grasses, shrubs and bulbs are receptive, flexible and balanced in their attitude. Even the lilies of the field push to be born into the Light.

The Master pushed to reach the Light and to show his disciples the way. Paul and Silas pushed to reach the Light, and an earthquake came to free them. Every man and woman must push to find his or her Source of Light.

Lent is the preparation for the Crucifixion and Resurrection. From Palm Sunday to Easter is a week of devotion, during which God sends the Power through you in great measure, as much as you can bear. When Jesus spoke of the truth behind the mysteries in public, many people left him. Even his disciples said, "This is an hard saying; who can hear it?"

Are you repeating history, or are you ready to resurrect all your old life? It takes forty days of listening and watching, to become ready. You must lift the body from death to a high place of refuge. The Master spoke the truth. Come, let yourself hear, act receptively, and be flexible. Let the truth balance your soul.

Preparation for Ascension

Edna Lister created this sermon outline for April 24, 1938, Cleveland, Ohio. Scripture: James 1:2-8.

"My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways." – James 1:2-8.

To ascend means to rise, and may refer to the rising of a celestial body. Ascension also refers to rising in a progression, an upward movement.

Three ideas relate to ascension: First, you must know about ascension. You must desire to ascend, and you must strive toward Ascension.

"Count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations" because every experience teaches you something and adds to your soul's growth.

Hearers and Doers

Edna Lister created this sermon outline for May 22, 1938, Cleveland, Ohio. Scripture: James 1:12-27.

"Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world." – James 1:12-27

"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world." – James 1:27."

Each person is a mirror. Each holds a mirror in front of himself. To keep yourself "unspotted from the world" means you have the dedication to God and the soul to be in the world, but not of it. This is ascension.

First, you must remember that your soul's task is ascension from earth while living on earth. You must escape the gravity of need. Second, you are charged to remember to ask for wisdom, "in faith, nothing wavering." Anything less and you bounce up and down on a yo-yo string. Third, you may not claim, "I am tempted of God." Only the self tempts you.

Finally, you must remember that every good and perfect gift comes from above. A good gift is a boon. The Father always gives you Power to spare, and greater Power when you go to Him and ask.

Edna Lister created this sermon outline for January 7, 1940, Cleveland, Ohio. Scripture: Matthew 5:25-26.

"Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing." – Matthew 5:25-26.

Every soul on earth is subject to seven great Vows of Ascension. Eventually, each soul must take them as part of the seven great Degrees of Initiation, the Neophyte, the Disciple, the Adept, the Master, the Priest and the Christos.

As a Neophyte, you vow to make your body a fitting dwelling place for your soul. As a Disciple you vow to surrender self completely to become the servant of all the Power. As an Adept, you vow to be selfless in your release of Power.

As a Mystic, you vow to keep your silence shining and golden. As a Master, you vow to be a master in all responsibility. As a Priest, you vow to remain pure in heart, mind and purpose. As a Christos, you vow to make your supreme vow of complete surrender of self. You need something to help you to hold to these vows, to keep them. You follow the Master, whose footsteps are always before you.

The period from Christmas to Lent encompasses a whole lifetime of 33.5 years. This explains why it is so difficult always to hold to your vows, especially while making the required sacrifices of self during Lent.

"Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison." – Matthew 5:25. This one verse covers all your problems with the self. The self is the adversary, soul is the judge, and Oversoul is the officer. Self casts you into prison. Soul lifts you into Light.

Life's highway is marked with many milestones, and each bears a record. What sort of year has passed? What sort of year lies ahead? This is your world. This is your life. What is your choice? What are your high goals? What is your high destiny?

Five Steps in Ascension

Edna Lister created this sermon outline for April 16, 1950, Cleveland, Ohio. Scripture: Acts 3:1-10.

"Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. And a certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God: And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple: and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him." Acts 3:1-10.

A miracle is either an instantaneous act or a slow process, according to your desire, awareness, recognition, acceptance and surrender. The length of the process of healing depends on your desire and the degree of your consciousness. Desire is the Creative Impulse, a fundamental principle, which you bring with you to earth, and use turned either up or out and down into the world.

Awareness is the awakening of consciousness. When you are unaware, you are unconscious. You are supposed to be aware of whether a friend or danger is approaching. You are more easily aware of love or hate. Yet you must synthesize all five senses into one for true awareness. Recognition, which means "to know again," is also a universal faculty. You use it to place a person or a thing within a frame of reference, to give it a name.

Acceptance is always personal. All too often people say, "I accept," when they really want to think about it and still not accept it. While acceptance is crucial to ascension, it is important not to accept resentment, blame or criticism as yours before you lift it. Surrender of self is an act of soul. People dislike the idea of surrender, thinking that it means giving in to others. Yet you surrender to God first, then to love, to forgiveness and to Light. When you have truly surrendered, you are then lifted, filled, used and happy because God needs you.

"A certain man lame from his mother's womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple; who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked an alms. And Peter, fastening his eyes upon him with John, said, Look on us." – Acts 3:2-3.

Jesus said, "Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." – Matthew 28:20. Peter was with John at the Temple. "With" means you are never alone. It's never a case of God and you, but God with you as you. Like Peter, you can say, "What I have, I can give always," for I have the Light of the Creator. The creature consciousness dwells in the darkness of self. Only a creator has the desire and the will power to surrender freely to God.

All things are made of this Light, which is always flowing and available. The Light does the work as the Power. Light is the way of ascension. All you do and all you can use is Light to create the right emotional and mental conditions for God to move in and heal. When you use a weak love, poor in quality, it causes delay. If you want time, as length, instead of quality, you must leave so much out, which is the difference between now and later.

You receive the hidden riches from above when you create from Light. At first glance, ascension is like being a mountain climber, climbing, staying level or descending. Yet true ascension is going up always. Jesus will return as he left. When he ascended, he rose into heaven and disappeared. At his return, he will be unseen by the world of men, seen only by a few, riding on a cloud.

To think and declare, "He has come! He is here!" is the creator's attitude of expectancy. The creature expects to be hurt, and thus fears. The creator lives in fervent anticipation of more Light, life and glory.

Declare, "I am health, wealth, love, for "I am become rich, I have found me out substance." – Hosea 12:8.

Pentecost: The Way of Ascension

Edna Lister created this sermon outline for May 7, 1950, Tacoma, Washington. Scriptures: Acts 2:1-8, Acts 2:17-20.

"And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?" – Acts 2:1-8.

"And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come." – Acts 2:17-20.

The Way of Ascension is a way of life, beauty, strength and of glory. The Way of Ascension is all that is.

Jesus had appeared to and met with his disciples often during the forty days between Easter and his Ascension. He gave them "charges," orders about what they were to do. He had charged them to remain in Jerusalem, saying, "Ye shall be baptized by the Holy Spirit." They watched him ascend, then a hundred and twenty of them gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem, where they waited ten days for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. "Cloven tongues of fire" sat upon them, yet they were unafraid. Why did it take so long for the baptism to descend?

The first step in ascension is receptivity, which prepares you to fulfill the great law of "Seek ye first the kingdom of God." – Matthew 6:33. Receptivity, which is open mindedness, deals with your gifts and your relationship with God. The disciples and apostles spent ten days in the upper room while they raised the vibration of their cells, body, brain and endocrine glands. As you ascend in consciousness, you let go of old thoughts, pictures and emotions, which lower your vibration overall. Clearing your thinking first is easiest. Then you deal with the pictures you have created with negative emotions and imagination. Mankind is still struggling to attain the pattern Christ set 2,000 years ago.

The second step in ascending is flexibility, to "Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him." – Matthew 5:25. Agree with God that "This is good," and adjust to man without arguing. Learn to bend without breaking under pressure, to accept your lessons in life, and to hold your place on the path.

The third step of ascension is balance in preparation, devotion and action. Balance is poise and equilibrium in your service. Holding your balance is easier when you always ask, "What is that to thee? Follow me." – John 21:22. Your devotion must be great in quality and quantity. Apply devotion as gratitude and praise above, before the thrones, and as love below, for your fellow man, which draws the blessing of joy to you. Balanced action is always doing the next thing next, with your eyes on the Light while ignoring outer appearances. Balance knows that it is never too late, it never takes too long, and lives without fussing or worrying.

First, you must know about Ascension and Pentecost. Then you must desire to ascend, to be a witness to the descent of the Holy Spirit. Finally, you must strive upward toward both, with all your mind, heart, body and soul. Part-time love, faith and devotion are not enough. Eyes part-time on Light, part-time on the dark are not enough, or you see "in part, through a mirror darkly." You must exercise and practice all your gifts.

And it Came to Pass

This is an excerpt from an Edna Lister sermon transcript dated September 10, 1950, Buffalo, New York. Scribes: Edna Bender and Joan Bender Dinse. Scriptures: Hebrews 11:1-11, Hebrews 11:29-34.

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised." – Hebrews 11:1-11.

"By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned. By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days. By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace. And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions. Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens." – Hebrews 11:29-34.

This chapter of the Letter to Hebrews is one of the New Testament's mightiest themes, all about the miracles showered on those who had faith, though it may have been unconscious. Read it often to release Power, to spark your interest in God, and to find new ways to exercise your faith, for "He rewards those who diligently seek Him." These verses, especially the descriptions of tribulations, prove that early Christian groups had their fair share of nitpickers. They are with us today, too, which is good, because we need them to hold us on track.

A life without adversity would allow your flame of faith to flicker and die, yet one chooses to look up to God, while another regards evil or looks at the mud. Yes, life sometimes hurts if you let it, but you can make your personal kingdom into pure glorious Light when you see it and declare it so, for joy about even the smallest miracle brings the next. Others often depend on your faith to bolster theirs, because the weak lean on the strong. Those who lean on others are always with you, yet to "let your Light so shine," you must do something about it.

The Bible, which is the legacy of humanity's evolution, expresses fundamental divine law as psychological, metaphysical, scientific, philosophical and mystical values. The Master is always releasing more Power, and writing new universal laws on your heart. Do you want to live by the vertical law, "I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me." – John 12:32, or by the horizontal earth-laws of emergence, maturity and decline? The wise soul chooses emergence, maturity and ascension instead. The future is no place to start, so you step up, give up a little more petty self and begin your true soul ascension. You must learn your lessons here, and everyone should be well along the Path of Ascension by age forty-five.

Each may choose his approach to ascension, outward or inward. Yet you cannot find the laws of soul ascension in the outward approach, which seeks in the world and leads to decline. So you begin with "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." – Hebrews 11:1. Science seeks the true Way of Ascension in atomic research, and uses the invisible, supernatural atomic substance of faith. Yet, since the impulses of self fill your path with stumbling blocks and losses, you must unbind your body from earth or regress.

"Inward, upward, onward" must be your motto as you expand and arise into the realm of the miraculous. Ask yourself, Where am I headed, definitely, positively in the world of people and things? Am I still concerned with what "they" do and say? "Inward," to the world, means within the self, which leads into the Land of Egypt. So you must seek inward, within the soul, upward to meet God, and onward to the Source. To rise into the Light, you must blend all weight, identity, tone and color into the Christ Light.

Surrender and Ascension 1

Edna Lister created this sermon outline for June 28, 1953, Buffalo, New York. Scripture: Ephesians 4:1-15

"I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ." – Ephesians 4:1-15.

Jesus descended to ascend. When he took human form, he was in captivity, in bondage on earth. He led "captivity captive" when he conquered life, overcame death and ascended. The Christ method is simple: There is one body, and one Spirit, one Lord (the law of love), one faith, one Baptism of Water and one of Fire.

You move from surrender to Ascension through three steps of transmutation, transformation and transfiguration. First, you make a general surrender of old ideas, which is transmutation. Then surrender your past emotions, thoughts and pictures of imagination, which is transformation. Finally, you sacrifice one piece of self after another in a step-by-step surrender to rebuild the body. We call this transfiguration.

Transfiguration is a combination of your growing love of God and faith of God, which fills you with Light, glory and a desire for more God. All is good. With the sublimation of all life's forces and powers within, you experience the Christing, the unfolding of white soul wings. As Jesus did, you can say, "Father, glorify Thyself as me. Thy Name is Good."

Am I good enough? Do I love enough? Is my effort great enough to pay dividends, and to bring miracle after miracle? When I hear the Voice from heaven calling, does it scare me? Do I hunt the bomb shelter of self and dig in further? Surrender through Rebirth, Transformation and Transfiguration to Ascension here and now. You can change the world, businesses, dispositions, and the health of bodies.

Transforming your ship o' dreams is up to you. Your hold is full of old life ideas, so unload it now. Put in a new load, a new cargo of ideas, mental pictures and thoughts of the love of God. This is how to lead captivity captive and free soul from bondage to self. Love is the Transfiguration, moving forth on the white wings of joy. Ascension is mine when I put my new prayer molds on my ship o' dreams then fill and cover them all with love.

Surrender and Ascension 2

This Edna Lister sermon transcript is dated July 12, 1953. Scribe: Ruth Johnson, Cleveland, Ohio. Scripture: Ephesians 4:1-25.

He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ. From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But ye have not so learned Christ; if so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another." – Ephesians 4:1-25.

Jesus had to descend to lift earth and its inhabitants, and to open the Gates of Light so that we could ascend. Through the ages, whenever a descended creator fails, he or she is taken out of the body to try again. Jesus ascended through the Gates of Light. All mythologies deal with the after-life, underworld or lower worlds, because you must have a place where you can complete earth's lessons. A deathbed repentance does not pay the spiritual debts, but it does let you work back to pay your spiritual debts. Jesus taught these truths to his disciples. Later, Paul brought more mysteries through the veil, although he never knew Jesus. Perhaps that's why he dared to bring though mysteries the other disciples did not.

"There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. – Ephesians 4:4-5. The one law" to apply here is that God created everything of, by, for and from one Light. This includes everything expressed in these verses. Jesus used the law of nonresistance as complete surrender of self to be used by Light and thus fulfilled his Ascension. He conquered death through ascension of consciousness.

You face three primary challenges in returning to God: Rebirth, Transformation and Transfiguration. Unless you live according to the necessity of facing these three challenges, you cannot return with your original life wave, the souls with whom you descended. No one can prevent you from entering heaven, yet you must pass certain grades to enter on time. If you entered a university, but lost a year's credit, you could not expect to graduate with your original incoming class unless you made up the lost time. The class would not wait for you.

The initiations of Rebirth, Baptism by Water and Baptism by Fire are mysteries waiting to be unveiled. Rebirth is a two-way covenant. First, you are baptized with water on your "lower parts" of the creature soul and embodied rational soul. Then you are baptized with fire from above, the Light of Oversoul.

Baptism by Water establishes your covenant with God to surrender self and ascend. Baptism by Fire means that God's Power will move in to use you. Baptism by Water protects you from the world. It is a rite of purification that leads you to nonresistance. Baptism by Fire marks the descent of the flames of the Holy Ghost, which is the Father's answer to your request to ascend. His Power touches and strengthens you to uphold your part of the agreement.

A man can transform his life and consciousness to grow up to the Christ. Transformation and transmutation are different processes. Transformation means putting on the new. Paul said, "I die daily." Each morning you arise to a new day. Transformation deals with outer form, with taking on "the new man." As you surrender to Light, it enters and your body becomes Light. You leave darkness behind and ascend.

If you wallow in evil, you freeze your body into a pattern of darkness. Think of the time you waste declaring it good just to break the ice and loosen it. If you say it is ice, it remains ice. If you recognize darkness as yours, it freezes your feet to the ice. Lift instantly anything God sends to you, darkness in yourself or in others. Do you want credits in heaven? If so, will you welcome paying the world's spiritual debts?

Jesus glistered during his Transfiguration because the Father invested His full radiance in him. The Light shone from within him, visibly shining through his clothing. How was this possible? Jesus had so completely surrendered self to be used by Power that he drew his life sparks from the physical and walked in his atomic fire body. Ask yourself, "Do I love enough? Is my effort great enough? Am I good enough?" When you can say, "I have stood serenely and confidently declaring everything is good," for thirty days, you have a benchmark, a measuring rod of your surrender of self.

Love enough recognizes no evil. Yet sympathy stops short of loving enough. It recognizes, names and declares the darkness, then commiserates sentimentally. Love enough sends forth compassion to heal. God charges the debt to the one who builds the vibration of darkness. He credits the account of the one who lifts without recreating more darkness.

Those who live by the Christ Light, and ascend, have no inner conflicts because they declare all things good. Brace the one who needs compassion, and the one who sympathizes with him. Love them equally. Love enough is compassion that touches both sides, right and wrong. God does not judge your choice as wrong. He says, "You could have done better today." Make the effort now. Declare it good now. This is how to remain in the Holy of Holies.

Are you satisfied with your "grain of mustard seed" faith? After two thousand years, it's time your mustard seed grew into a mighty tree. It has flowered and you have grown into its leaves of all-conquering love. You are the blossoms that God can behold from heaven. It's time you graduated from a seed-faith. Let your face shine like the sun. Find a sunlit place to stand. If you seem to pass through one grim place after another, make each your present sunny promenade.

Law works for you when you let it. Millions of life sparks, mountains of soul substance are ready to fill your creative prayer molds. Have you changed the cargo on your ship of dreams lately? Stow a new cargo of glory. A whole fleet sails under my banner. You could have the same. If you do not taste the ecstasy of Shekinah glory, you either have no fleet or have not yet seen your fleet's white-winged banners of joy.

Endowed with the Holy Ghost, stand as one with God. Some who experience this revelation become frightened and run to their bomb shelters to escape the Light. God's bank contains a vault with your name. It contains baskets overflowing with all abundance for you and those you love. As you ascend, your white wings of joy descend.

"Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits." – Matthew 7:15. We say, "By their works ye shall know them." Love enough. Honor God enough. When you can see the banner of joy flying over your fleet, you will have reached the Mount of Transfiguration. Love is Transfiguration.

From Surrender to Ascension

This Edna Lister sermon transcript is dated January 15, 1954, Honolulu, Hawaii. Scribe: Kay Wilder Abstein. Scripture: Ephesians 4:1-15.

He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ." – Ephesians 4:1-25.

Soul ascension is the path we have traveled since we began incarnating on earth. Which part of you, the self or the soul, does the directing? Your attraction, either to the world or to inner glory, sets the keynote of whether you surrender, and to what degree.

"Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things." – Ephesians 4:9. The law of action and reaction compelled Jesus to descend before he could ascend.

When you purchase a product in the business world, you exchange money as the substance for it. The only payment for the misuse of Mind, Substance and Power is to cover it with almighty love. Jesus conquered some common sin for everyone, and he gave love to cover the cost of sins. You cannot wipe out a debt by simply saying, "I forgive you," but must cover it with love. That is the law.

"There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." – Ephesians 4:4-6. Each person uses the terms, body, Spirit, faith and law in a different way. We can all pick blossoms from the same tree, but none of us can pick the same flower. We are all made in the image and likeness of God, but even identical twins differ in subtle ways. The Holy Ghost, the very breath you draw, is a consuming fire, a Light that must move through the body to devour negative thoughts, fears and doubts.

"When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men." – Ephesians 4:8. Dynamic deep breathing is part of ascension on high. God knew that we would be too lazy to breathe, so He made it automatic. Yet some people still die because they do not breathe deeply enough.

First, surrender to the idea that God is, and you are part of Him. The "high" in "on high" is the joy of finding God and receiving His joy. Joy is the new name for the Holy Ghost. A captive is in bondage, someone whose material goods or relatives possess him. You are not on earth to be served, made happy, to demand of others, to have everything made beautiful for you, but to serve, make others happy and give, give, give.

Rebirth, transformation and transfiguration are the three steps to ascension. You are reborn every time you look up and find God, but must also be reborn with each breath you inhale. You can be reborn every minute because transformation goes on constantly. It can take days, sometimes years to bring forth a new body part for healing. Continue breathing the high breath, and every time you give up fears, resentments or negative emotions, it transforms you. Finally, you take half a breath here, and half there, while you stand here, balanced. For example, you step out of this earthly body and go over to the inner every night.

We have built the soul of a College of Ascension with every prayer we have made for it, and it will be visible when we precipitate its body. By the work of our hands, by the love in our hearts and souls, we will bring this to pass. Yes, I believe that God could precipitate the buildings for our College right now. We do it the long way, but who would say it is not good?

You are learning how to cooperate with God, and have reached the Mount of Transfiguration, the point where Spirit begins to show. You "see the unseen" when you have melted and dissolved all darkness between. The Power that Jesus released with his sacrifice as he passed to the other side, lifted the veil and the vibration of everything around him. Scripture says that "the dead walked." They were there the whole time, but not visible.

Transfiguration is knowing that God as love is. Love's answer is always yes. Love is perfection. When love moves in, it brings only perfection. When you transfigure the inner emotional life and surrender the mental life to the Mind of God, calling everything good, then love can do the work. You do not want just to call your enemies "good," but to shine by comparison. The subconscious mind knows nothing, but follows and takes its direction from the emotional life. The soul says, "I can go forty days without food or rest, and work in the vineyard." Your soul's renewal transforms you.

Your eyes, endocrine glands and nervous system are gifts the Almighty Father has given you, in which He put part of Himself. When you say, "Look at me," you close out the Holy Breath, which fuels the physical body for daily metabolism, exercise, work and the giving of gifts. You limp and drag, saying, "Go away, Holy Breath," and you flop. Are you proud of having cut off the magnetic ray of Power? Surrender of self is the beginning. Always speak lovingly, and give the body a chance to ascend in vibration. You transform Light into the negatives, so why not practice the opposite? The Power and Love of God are perfect.

Unload your ship of dreams with me, and dump the spoiled cargo. Fill your ship's hold with good things – vacations, cars, homes, beautiful furnishings, health and miracles for everyone. See the hold filled with Light, and a cargo of gold, jewels and riches, where everyone can go for supply, for it is always full of everything you use as a medium of exchange.

When God's Voice calls, do not hide in a bomb shelter or a vault. Let love fill your life and provide for everyone on your ship. "Let your light so shine before men that they see your good works and glorify your Father."

I Ascend 1

Edna Lister created this sermon outline for July 11, 1954, Cleveland, Ohio. Scriptures: John 1:50-51, John 2:1-11.

"Jesus answered and said to him, Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these. And he said to him, Verily, verily, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man." – John 1:50-51.

"The third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, and saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him." – John 2:1-11.

What is ascension? A mystical term, ascension is to the mystic what atomic research is to the scientist. It is a positive, deliberate moving inward, a "getting behind" the visible material appearance. Ascension is a refining process of the soul, the moving up from self-confidence, which is a variable factor, to soul confidence, which is a constant, based in divine principle.

Science penetrates though the outer husk into that inner substance, held within the outer shell as in a protective sheath. You cannot see the finer substance released from the atom with the physical eye. Yet you can see the effect during the controlled release of this substance. A mind penetrating this sheath of appearance is called ascension of consciousness. You may not see the soul of man with the physical eye, but you can see the effects of the soul's release of Power. Soul-power, unleashed, acts on the outer sheath.

Self-expression shows as what we call personality. Soul expression not only shows as personality, but the world feels it. Self-confidence impresses no one because you see through it. Soul confidence shows, and inspires the world. Living by self dulls the personality, while living by soul makes it shine. Self-confidence is based in outer things, but soul confidence places its trust in unfailing principle, which never falters.

Mary herself had been born of an immaculate conception. She had fully open spiritual seeing and hearing, and knew that Jesus must begin his ministry. Yet Jesus, who also knew, must have had a moment of something like dread. Remember, he suffered in all ways, even as other men suffer. He had to endure every experience to hold fast the lines of responsibility when he took them up through the Gates of Light.

The six stone waterpots symbolize a solid foundation. "Six" represents the creative cosmic Father and Mother, the double trinity of all creation. When his mother told the servants to obey him, she opened his mission on the love vibration, the Mother ray. She knew what he meant when he said, "Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come." She prepared the way. Jesus then ate his words. Immediately he opened his ministry by telling them to fill the waterpots. Simply, with no fuss, he told them to draw some wine and take it to the master of the feast.

When you pray, you must use all that you have now. At this point, selfish desire and self-centered will fuse into free will, the infallible perfect will of God. Soul, which is already part of God the All, instantly absorbs self-confidence into the I AM of soul confidence. Self-confidence must change into soul confidence when selfish desires and self-centered will become soul desires and free will, which form I AM consciousness, the fusing of desire and will.

Why does your neighbor not ascend in consciousness as you do? An immature chick in the shell is too weak to peck its way out, but would die if you opened its shell from the outside. A mother hen sits on the nest, alert to the tiniest peep, ready to get off, not to smother the chick. You cannot take anyone up too soon or too suddenly. Self-confidence must change to soul confidence slowly and gradually, or the explosion can burn out the finer soul function of the endocrine glands, which take a long time to replace.

Take ascension one step at a time, to ascend in consciousness slowly, gradually filled with the full Power of God. The full atomic Power is ninth dimensional substance, which burns out the dross. It is dynamic, dramatic, self-sustaining and self-renewing. Nothing on earth can resist its irresistible movement, for it changes anything it touches, and transforms your life.

How do you apply this to your daily life? Lift all your lines of Light and responsibility. You already hold the lines of earth responsibility, from all people in all the signs, in your hands. If you let go of the lines, they fall back, and entangle you with others. Yet all are safe while you are standing in the white Light of the Christ, holding the lines.

Mary, representing the feminine Mother of Love in this text, is soul intuition, a part of "I AM," saying, "The time has come." Every day is your miracle day. Love must always prepare the way. The son in this example is the little self, saying. "How does this relate to me?" Self is always afraid to let go of its "little" self-confidence, yet self must become soul confidence to know the glorious freedom from bondage to earth. Then is the promise fulfilled, "Verily, verily, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man." – John 1:51.

To ascend, you must first know what ascension means. Different cults and sects have made ascension so personal that especially self-confident persons apply it until they become too saintly to live with their families, break marital vows, and leave their loved ones with aching and broken hearts.

Soul ascension is to the world of devotion to God, to searchers and students of God's principles, exactly what atomic research is to scientists. Moving from outer to inner, science breaks the sheath of an atom, releasing protons, neutrons and electrons. Spirit moves through the five outer senses to the inner world of the soul where you find life's essence, but only if you accept.

You cannot prove these truths wholesale, and each must prove them for himself. You cannot break an atom, though your body does so constantly, but believe it can be done. You take the physicists' word on faith though are not in the lab, because you see the results. So you can take Jesus' words on faith because enough people have proven his words through the last nineteen centuries.

Ascension is moving inward and upward to the world of miracles. The mundane world will see and believe when enough people ascend to the miraculous world. You cannot contact your full powers of soul without three phases of ascension: Emergence from outer to inner, maturity or expansion in consciousness, and ascension inward and upward to the ninth dimension, which you use in healing and soul ascension.

The whole process of ascension is a travail of soul moving from self-confidence, which is egotism, to soul-confidence. "Father, I surrender to be possessed by all Power." You may not use Power, but it uses you. Self-confidence splits and cracks when needed most, but soul confidence is immutable and unchangeable because you have ascended to God. It increases your capacity to release Power and you can see the results. You see such self-expressions in the faces of people you meet. Failed self-confidence shows as the wrinkles of time. Soul has personality, which you can see as the Light within shining from the eyes. Eyes like a dead fish's show that the person has used up his soul substance. No self dims the eyes of an ascending soul.

This text paints a picture of Jesus and Mary at the wedding in Cana. Mary interfered when she said, "They have no wine," and Jesus told her to mind her own business. Yet she instructed the servants to do his bidding and he changed the water into wine. Jesus had to eat his words only twice, at the wedding, and in Gethsemane when he said, "Let this cup pass from me." Everyone must lift and wipe out his idle words and misused soul substance.

Pride is the adulterous taint that kills hope. Watch for it on your path. Most people think that admitting they are wrong is degrading, and flatter themselves if another rephrases to admit his error. Erase your misused words instantly, and admit you are still learning. Saying, "I do not know," is no disgrace. Every library is full of books that can give you the answers. [Today, the internet provides many answers.] You release Power when you answer a question. One who answers under great Light is responsible for the Power the answer releases, though the Masters pick up the slack or cover any slip.

Mary's incarnation was an immaculate conception. She knew her role in the overall plan for Jesus' mission, but did she know, as she started him on his ministry, that it would end in his death? She knew he would ascend, perhaps before thousands, but not after a crucifixion. Mary simply knew that Jesus had to begin his ministry on the vibration of Mother Love before he could ascend. The water at the wedding represented the ruling Wisdom vibration, which draws out, being changed into the wine of Spirit, the Love vibration that draws everything back to the Source.

This story describes how Jesus ascended from self-confidence to soul confidence. We are all self-confident in varying degrees, yet few of us have yet attained full soul confidence.

Why, you ask, won't your family and friends accept this new idea, too? Accepting new ideas and concepts means cracking the old idea's shell. You may not prematurely or harshly crack others' shells under ascension laws. You would smash atoms, destroy the endocrine glands and they would have nothing left with which to understand. The best way to crack another's shell is to be such an ensample of unconquerable faith, unquenchable love, invincible joy and irresistible attraction that the ninth dimension of universal fellowship reaches out and enfolds everyone. Never ask why, but simply follow the Via Christa to become an instrument of all Power.

Would you follow a moth-eaten teacher? Then why follow old, worn out ideas? Do you not seek a God of beauty, love, wisdom and joy? You are now ascending from self to soul confidence. How do you apply this to your life? Jesus came to experience every earth lesson and lift every line of darkness through the Gates of Light when he ascended. So did you. Someone on earth must reach out and draw in the fallen lines, and this is your duty today.

The Zodiacal Path is the Wheel of Fate, and its center is the hub of white Christ Light. Withdraw your past and step from your birth sign to the hub of Light when you ascend, though others may clutch and try to pull you off. You cannot drag others with you as you go to God, yet you can and must pick up their lines of Light and put them on a cloud continent for Light to transform them. Then you are responsible for holding the lines until they, too, ascend.

Stand on the hub of the wheel, in your room of Light when a blow strikes. The choice is yours. You can wallow in birth sign negativity, or ascend to the wheel's hub, lifting the darkened lines. Mary, prompting Jesus at the wedding, symbolizes the Mother preparing the way with love. Your time has come. The world needs the wine of Spirit, the Mother Love vibration leading from self to soul-confidence.

The six vessels of stone represent your creative powers based on immutable principles. Your Guards pour Power from waterpots to make your creative powers blossom. Declare, "Fill the waterpots," and they will. Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast of God's love.

Jesus, the Ascending God

This Edna Lister sermon transcript is dated December 19, 1954, Cleveland, Ohio. Scribe: Ruth Johnson. Scripture: Ephesians 4:1-15.

"Walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Ascension work on the Via Christa includes seven stages of ascending and unfolding soul growth for the world. From the time a creature is born into a body until the final portion of the living soul descends to him, he adds comprehension of God, a little at a time, until he passes through the seven stages. The same is true for a descended creator god who chooses to ascend back to the Source. You go through seven stages seven times, from pauper to prince, from being a janitor to the President of the United States.

First is the Rebirth in consciousness, where you catch the first glimmering of understanding that God is. The Baptism by Water, where one touches the "hem of the garment," is the first ascension of the emotions, the second ascension of consciousness. The third ascension of consciousness is the Baptism by Fire, which is Power moving down through the individual.

The glory begins to possess you during Transfiguration, and you ask, "What law did I break?" The Crucifixion is giving up creature nature, selfish desires, opinions and prejudices and "I think," which brings the "little death," where you wring self's neck. Sixth is Resurrection, where you have surrendered self to be possessed by Power, not trying to use Power yourself. Finally, you find ascension, which is to put on the robe of unconquerable faith, and enter the house of the love of God.

It takes the first set of seven to bring your consciousness into comprehension of God. Then you declare that each person or experience is good, according to its degree and kind. Always you struggle between believing the truth of appearances or the truth of reality, which is a Rebirth. For example, you could be injured here on the outer, but Spirit cannot be wounded.

What master will you serve, self or the Lord? Pray for healing, then declare it is so, instantly. Feed your fire of faith from above, saying, "Father, you have healed this. Let it come forth," then it descends through the fire body to the physical. A miracle cannot happen on a line of weakness. Know that when you make a healing statement, Power does come through on your spoken Word.

Under a Baptism by Water, you can creep or join God on wings. Give up your self-pitying tears, the taint of martyrdom, and grow soul wings. A Baptism by Fire always brings the descent of the Holy Ghost. Yet when the first Light of the Oversoul Star comes through, people run to doctors for prescriptions to stop the heat.

You reach Transfiguration when you know the one omnipresent God, who is in, through and above all, for "omni" means "in all ways, places and things." Each has his private live-wire of faith, a line of communication up to God, and Power returns to him over his private line. Do not let it be clogged with self, jammed with the static of self's whimpering.

Crucifixion is how you reach the first marriage of the Lamb, giving up self will for the Will of God. Lay everything, all your desires, on the step above. Do it from heart, not from the teeth out, because you cannot fool law. Law is the truth and knows the truth. Light begins to shine under Resurrection, when you stop crying about laying down your desires. Yet you have only a 50 percent miracle because you left your desires on the doorstep without lifting them.

You came here to fulfill your destined mission. Your Father wants you to pick up your desires and bring them up with us, or they become stumbling blocks. You had to lay your desires down to give up your self-will, then you must pick up your baby desires to nurture them as you ascend to God.

When all six stages are behind you, you see the glories of ascension. So you apply these principles of ascension: You must accept God as balance in harmony and equilibrium. He could not be love only, or all foundation principles without love. God is dual, the Father of Wisdom and Mother of Love, who beget the Son of golden Light.

The first step in ascension is to visualize heaven as place, and as a state of consciousness. You cannot get excited about a formless God in empty space. Your present imagination and vision can visualize gardens, temples and altars, and God as personality. Go to your own altar, visualize it, one step at a time, to go home to God.

The second step is to know your self. You have creative tools of imagination, thinking and desire, but may not live by subconscious mind, emotions or abilities. God created you for Power to use, but you may not use Power. These strictures have confused many students, who think, Why have it if I can't use it?

Unless you send the Spirit of the Lord before you, your spiritual fire can die down before you reach home at day's end. Set your subconscious mind like a clock to send Power before you into your home to meet, greet and prepare your way. That's better than to sigh, all tired out, sadly saying, "I am going home." Your way home will be gloomy rather than a radiant center, a Temple of Light. Unless you do this, you are not using your creative tools.

Great divine Power descends at holidays and causes family arguments. Robe them all in Light when you know that you are facing delicate family situations. Your servant subconscious mind does this. The white Light of Spirit moving through you becomes the diamond drilling bit of Light that goes down into others' subconscious and strikes crude oil.

Isaiah prophesied, "I will go before you, and make the crooked places straight. I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron, and I will give you the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places." – Isaiah 45:2-3. Our world runs on crude oil, which becomes kinetic energy to run equipment when refined. When you ascend your body, it is changed to accommodate the Power of the Living God to operate through you.

Your tool of flaming, burning desire becomes hungering and thirsting for comprehension. Imagination becomes vision in action. Declare, "My Father is above all, in and through all. He is rich, and can make a healthy, wealthy physical body. His is the atomic power of the world." Take a deep breath and fill your body with atomic energy. Breathe it, accept it, and ascend in consciousness on it.

Jesus really ascended. Ask yourself, "Do I have the trust it takes to put my faith in his law? Can I love enough, put enough effort into holding onto that 'live wire' of omnipotent faith and follow him?" Most people are "skull bumpers," who never get out of their own heads in prayer. Live in your symbolically five-pointed star of soul, and do not drop the lines of Light that bind you to all other souls. Live by eternal life, which is Light, and formulate a definite day by day Plan of Ascension in your initiations. You need a life plan to live by soul and to let Power use you while you use your creative tools.

Jesus walked on the waters of emotion, and you can, too. Just lift up your self-will, and mate it with God's will. "He led captivity captive," and you can, too. Your former captivity to self will become captive to the living God. Top ↑

Stories That Illustrate Ascension

The Ascension of Jesus the Christ: Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: to whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: and, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. – Acts 1:2-11.

The Ascension of Enoch: And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: and Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: and all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: and Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. – Genesis 5:21-24.

Elijah's Ascent in the Fiery Chariot: Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground. And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so. And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces. – 2 Kings 2:8-12.

New Testament on Ascension

Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing. – Matthew 5:25-26. [You will by no means get out of the prison of self till you have lifted the last soul taint.]

Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. – Matthew 5:48.

Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. – Matthew 6:33.

Do not conflate the world's nature with heaven's: they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven. And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err. – Mark 12:25-27.

And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. – Luke 24:50-51.

No man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. – John 3:13-16.

I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. – John 12:32.

Christ said: I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. – John 14:6.

Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) – Romans 10:4-7.

But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) – Ephesians 4:7-10.
