Spiritual Seeing and Hearing

Clairvoyance and clairaudience, literally “clear” seeing and hearing, enable perception of sight and sound beyond what is considered the normal human range. Some call these faculties psychic ability or extrasensory perception. However, they are perception of only a limited range of light and sound, bound by the truth of appearance and subject to illusion.

The topic of spiritual seeing and hearing treats one of the most dangerous snares that you, the soul, must encounter on the Way of Ascension. Just because you think what you see or hear is true does not make it so. Trusting to your imagination or opinion as a final arbiter of reality is what caused Satan to fall: “And [Jesus] said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.”—Luke 10:18.

Evil’s only weapons are illusion, deception, fear and despair. Youth is a dangerous time because the young, commonly believing that they already know everything they need to know, do not listen when warned about the dangers of this world. “Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”—2 Corinthians 11:14. You are in jeopardy unless you have found a spiritual mentor who is rooted and grounded in Christ, and who can aid you in discerning the truth of God’s reality versus the truth of appearances in this world.

Beyond clairvoyance and clairaudience lay higher orders of vision and hearing—fully aware and non-trance—seership and prophecy. Seership, the ability to foresee the future, includes mastery of interpreting symbols. Prophecy, foretelling the future, includes inspired teaching.

Spiritual seeing and hearing is based on the endocrine and central nervous systems’ development and degree of function, which is a measure of your present soul expression. The clarity of seeing and hearing depends on the degree of conquering or sublimation of self and subconscious mind already accomplished, which is also a measure of present soul expression. You are your own limitation.

Anything can come instantly, if you have gathered enough Light substance to enable it to appear. You can have that substance only by looking at the Light, standing in the Light, and thanking God that you can see the Light. Light is all you need to see. Until you can see only the Light, you will never see anything.

Look at the Light. Stand in the Light. Live in the Light. Take everything into the Light with you. Give only Light every second, and you will not need to worry about seeing! Many waste much valuable time seeking selfishly to see and hear when all God asks is prayer of lifting love and fulfilling prayer of praise. To see spiritually, look with your physical eyes open, which is different from looking with your eyes shut. At first you think you are seeing the Master’s chair with physical eyes. Also, you must test yoursupposed intuition. If you have a flash of vision, immediately go to the Mercy Seat and ask the Father if it is true. He sends you back, usually two or three times to see and check that it is no illusion. You will be shown pictures and asked where they originate. At night, your soul travels, so in the early hours of the morning, ask about what you see and hear to verify it.—Edna Lister, April 3, 1942.

You must learn to use your own physical senses and observational abilities for seeing and hearing on earth first, then in heaven. You do both from the time you are conscious, after reaching earth, and whenever you face some unusual need for extra faculties, usually under fear or unexpected great stress. It is a purely spiritual intuition, a sense of “knowing” the truth.

Yet, as you continue looking and listening, Light reaches into the actual physical optic nerves that also function as the all-seeing eye. Then, vaguely and dimly at first, gradually growing stronger, you begin to see the forms “like unto a Son of Man.” At this stage any doubt or questioning why seems to scare it away. You are always doing one or both of these. So, just keep on keeping on and someday, inevitably, you cannot avoid seeing and hearing. Just keep on.—Edna Lister, July 29, 1942.

You have a great destiny. You know your weaknesses and your great strengths, which hold you in the Light. You are stronger than you have ever been. Your eyes and ears are open. If you hold to that high calm point of activity, you will see and hear spiritually. The seven veils of illusion being lifted from your soul vision are the seven ascents of the creative fire from the sacrum plexus center to the crown of your head, 7 x 7 = 49. With each ascent, you gain clearer soul vision. However, any self-desires allow it to sink, which causes a deeper blindness, leaving only smug ideas of past knowledge, self-righteousness because of past understanding of law, and a sense of always-being-right because of past obedience to orders and law. Love enough opens everything, and only love can open the physical glands on earth, or open the Gates of Heaven. Do not force, become tense or strained, for this always closes out love. Watch closely lest you let anything from your past earthy consciousness creep in with you. Close all mental and soul doors to earth’s pettiness, caused by those who do not know God. Conscious living and spiritual seeing and hearing are only a matter of raising the vibration of your body and endocrine glands high enough. However, this must be a slow process to be perfect. Do not ask why you can’t see spiritually, but thank God that you can see. “Lord, please open thou the eyes of my mind so I shall know.” Then take time to see in the morning or upon leaving the golden silence. It’s always open, but you must accept and, though never forcing, just keep gently pushing through to see. Keep expecting it and saying, “I see I see. I hear. I hear. Thank you, Father. Thank you Father!” Thank the Father millions of times.
  In perfect trust, lean back comfortably on the river of life in ease, just looking intently, as if you must see an airplane through the mist above you. It’s only one step beyond this feeling of closeness to recalling what you have seen and heard. Keep looking, and you’ll see all. If you can see, why, you can see. Always check with me to be certain that what you think you see and hear spiritually is true. Truth is truth and stands as the same truth to all everywhere. Thus, to check the truth of soul vision and hearing will keep you from wandering off into the vale of illusion, which is destruction to a mediator’s spiritual gifts.—Edna Lister, October 9, 1944.

Never neglect your outer contacts completely for the inner. Always hold onto your Light-line for balance. God cannot use you if you become single-celled, doing only inner work, for you would awaken no new brain cells. Meet new people when possible, attend concerts, and visit friends. Teach and give what you have received of law to all who seek you. Study and practice, write and visit, but maintain your balance between body and soul, the world and spiritual realms.
  You will find yourself not needing books written by others for a long time to come. The kingdom of heaven is open to you, so seek your answers in it and in your Bible. Make time daily for the golden silence, where you listen and speak, but do not write. Such automatic writing contacts the appetitive soul and subconscious mind, but closes out Oversoul’s highest super-conscious mind, the mind that was in Christ Jesus. You cannot fully lift the subconscious mind while you are constantly using it on the outer.
  You desire to penetrate into the very heart of God, so only on rare occasions will you be permitted to write what you hear in the silence simultaneously as you hear it. Write a description of what you think you saw and heard after you return from classes or the silence. Do all things in the right time and to the glory of the Father only.
  See how much you can recall. Jot down anything you see or hear. After going to the altar and praying, lie in the golden silence and ask the Master to open the record for you to see and hear the whole episode. Then after you return, write it if you care to do so, but always enter the golden silence to reread or have the records opened to you. To write and record it here is good. However, to go out in soul-flights to the place is another phase, and very much greater.—Edna Lister, October 17, 1944.

Experiences that teach you law and show you the way are always good and very good. God never deceives anyone. Yet, each soul must be cleansed of its own conceits, and so must come through the vale of illusion into all knowledge. Your guards and the Master must watch in sorrow when you delude yourself. They may only protect you from harm, loss of place, position and point, and hold you as you wander in a self-made confusion.
  Yet, even while deluded, you are still free to choose. Innocence protects no one, high or low in stature. Only full knowledge gained by experience and wisdom can protect you. To be an oracle, used fully by God as a mediator between heaven and earth, you must cleanse soul of self. Everything you see and hear, you color to the degree of self still remaining in you.
  The law of “As above, so below” includes honor as well—“As below in honor, so above.” And you did not check as you were told to, but acted in self-will not backed even by earthly honor. You were cautioned to go slowly, to wait upon the Lord, to ask not, only to let. In spite of this, you kept demanding to see, to hear, and to write until you finally beat down the thin veils of illusion, which are your protection—and your guards could do nothing about it. The force you used in demanding created a direct line to a deceiver, whose vibration was familiar, but who had often fooled you in the past.

  When you forget, use force or otherwise disobey, your guards and the Master cannot protect you. Innocence is no protection to anyone, neophyte or advanced seer—only full knowledge and wisdom protects. A spring bud remains folded tightly to protect it from frost, but if you forcefully tear it apart, frost ruins and blackens it. You have done this to your own golden bowl equipment with your demands.
  The writings, which you think divinely inspired, were compounded of themes in my letters to you, and the universal records of words spoken. They may be true, as a machine-made recording is true, but are from the past. They may be all right to hear, speak or write of, but only when the one so doing knows that they are but past records and clearly says so. Everything you have heard in the silence so far is colored by your own interpretation, for you are not yet cleansed of all self to be an impersonal instrument for God’s use. So long as you ask in your mind and heart to see or to hear, law credits your desire as to the self.
  When I told you that I did not wish to see your personal writing, I had no idea that you would write messages for others. That was your own idea, borne of a selfish desire to express before others and so prove your importance. You are, of course, free to do as your will and desires dictate. Once you decided to demand and grasp, you gained access to a truth after its own degree and kind, but with no ability to discern truth from delusion, or to discriminate among the degrees of truth. In seeking to lead others when you lacked discernment, discrimination and discretion, you were unable to protect yourself or them. Thus, in your self-centered desire for expression, you led them into confusion.
  You do not need to send me your own personal writings. I am not interested in them. Yet, remember, your guards are protecting you from making grave mistakes in discernment and being responsible for misleading others. To wait, to mediate, to ponder the Light until you no longer use your own imagination, or past records is best. Because what you wrote had been previously written or said, it had the ring of truth and made others believe that you were of the truth. Had you checked with me, your writings could have been made right and clear. When you work through imagination, lacking discernment, discrimination and discretion, then it goes to your head as strong wine, step by step until you are lost.
  No one may play with the soul powers of a mediator for mere self-satisfaction or to be thought great. You have proven yourself unable to place these truths in their right degrees. Unless you can discern, discriminate and segregate the degrees of truth, you have no business seeking to lead others, which is how the blind lead the blind until both fall into the ditch. You and I must build a bond and a vibration of Light between us, under God’s laws and protection until you are strong enough to uphold His law and orders. Cutting weakness asunder from strength is far better than having the weakness spread among the ignorant and innocent.
  You can see and hear spiritually; however, never use your imagination to mediate. Wait upon the Lord while learning sufficient law to equal these so-great gifts. Of what use are you when you are unable to discriminate between your own imagination creating illusions, past records labeled as current truth, instant knowledge of an alien vibration seeking to break through, and actually seeing the form and hearing the voice of each Agent of God? Wait upon the Lord in the golden silence for speech, to receive law and personal orders of direction. Afterward, write everything you can recall. Check these writings with me for confirmation. One day, you will be able to see who is saying, “Write.” Then you will know you have begun to mediate truly. Until your status is confirmed from above, you must continue to check with me.
  If you had continued to act without inner permission, your heart would have failed within two years, and your full mission would have been lost to earth. And you would have gone out as a self-induced transition from self-will and disobedience to orders, having done so under full knowledge of law and its reaction under misuse. Unfold properly to be of use to God and the Master. Leave the role of the medium, the automatic writing and such to the blind, the weak, and those willful ones who seek gifts for nothing and become the blind leading the blind. Do you desire to serve in delusion and lead others into illusion? If not, lift your own veil of illusion by plodding practice, by honest and lengthy honorable obedience to God’s Orders.—Edna Lister, October 20, 1944.

Spiritual seeing is utterly dangerous to you if you do not use enough discretion as to be able to tell the difference between an inner reality and your imagination, self-delusion, self-illusion, or illusions created by bodiless entities still seeking a resting place for their false work.—Edna Lister, October 25, 1944.

Trance mediums, psychics, and mentalists hear and see only on the lower planes of consciousness near earth. Mediators are fully conscious to hear and see above the Gates of Light in heavenly realms. Then only may they become prophets and speak. This is for their safety. Innocence is no protection. Only full knowledge of law enables full protection.
  You must be able to identify the illusions that your own imagination can create, and to discern reality. If you use the slightest force to gain mediator ability, it opens a line to the lower levels of consciousness, which invites false ones to enter and give false messages, or even to twist true words. The Guardian Angels cannot protect anyone who does not know and abide by these truths, even if they are full of love and high desires. You will learn these truths first hand, step by step in the golden silence.
  If you can force your will, you are still in bondage to self. What difference is greed for money or greed to see and hear? Greed is greed, and the latter much worse than the first. When you demand, even innocently, law requires that you must take everything that comes with the satisfaction of your demand. God cannot set any law aside for anyone. Going slowly, step by step is best, and to let the great soul powers awaken the mediator’s abilities slowly, while giving full knowledge of protection.
  I could always hear and see. Yet, I was fifty before my full mediator abilities opened. Only then could I guide and guard those whom I trained to be sure of discriminating between imagination and illusion, know this for them and for myself, and hold all lines of Light and responsibility in protection, knowing exactly when and what to do. Even when I had all knowledge, I held back because of the great dangers to those for whom I became responsible, whose debts I must pay if they misuse my teachings.
  Would you wish to spend aeons paying debts for those who are hurt, wounded, or misled because in your eagerness, you forced your mediation before you had the knowledge to protect yourself and them from the effects of your own greed and force? To have self-satisfaction now for a few months may mean many lives to undo the harm. Seek advice and verification of every spiritual experience. Submit to having them checked, otherwise you are hiding truth or guilt from yourself and the Light. Shall God grant prayers for spiritual gifts to those who clamor yet are unwilling to pay for these gifts by surrendering and sacrificing the self? He exacts a price for inestimable gifts from on high — You must conquer the self while devoting the time and effort to gain the necessary knowledge.
  Desire is only a stairway. You can gain knowledge only by daily sacrifice in which you never ask for selfish reasons. Therefore, if you still ask to see or hear, it is proof that the self still rules you. When you are daily in such surrender that God’s love fills you to the exclusion of all else, you will have no time left for the clamoring of self. Step by step is the Master’s Way. Hour by hour living, loving, lifting, serving and knowing, spending hours in the golden silence waiting upon the Voice of God.
  If you want to set aside time each day to practice, do so, but not even then will it always be possible for your guards to aid you. If you demand they attend you instantly, then you are selfish. To release God’s love, hour by hour, is the only true way to open spiritual hearing and vision. Seeing first is better, lest you clog the channel of vision by practicing too close to earth. Balance is required, unless only automatic writing is the goal. Choose. Stand and love, asking nothing for the self.—Edna Lister, October 26, 1944.

In my early years of ascension work, my biggest trap was my mouth! I always knew that I could not evade any responsibility and that I was fully responsible for the outer effects of every word I spoke or wrote. Initiations are useless when someone else writes your papers for you. Strength comes from misusing law, having your nose rubbed in it, and so learning how not to do it. God is so good to allow us to release enough love to make everything right.
  Give no more law at a time than your listener can bear and use. Otherwise, he will misuse it and it will take longer just love him up in consciousness again. Releasing the power of love cannot harm or mislead anyone. Experience is a good counselor, and true protection. You are only as great as the extent of your ability to be completely surrendered in obedience. Obeying law is best, even if you see no way forward.
  The path is narrow and beset with snares and delusions. When any self remains, you can fall into these pits, one after another. Take the low chair if you desire to sit in the high one. If you give one thought to withdrawing from the responsibility of your own ill-advised acts, then that is self. Lift the self. Any self that a mediator permits to remain can cause an upside-down interpretation of what she sees and hears. Your interpretation must be universal, not personal. The only true and safe approach to spiritual seeing and hearing is through the golden silence. Reading books, playing hymns, and writing messages are outer objective actions stemming from inner subjective motives. Light protects you on the outer only when you also bow your subconscious mind before the altar in the Christ Light. If you do not heed, you pay the debts you thus create.
  Hasty use of the spiritual gifts does not make anyone, high or low, a true prophet. It makes such a one a mediator part-time and a medium part-time, and so he leads the world into confusion. However, only such an experience can truly teach the heights of the inner laws to the willful one.—Edna Lister, October 30, 1944.

No one likes to look at the hidden self. That is exactly why people hide it so safely and securely deep below the surface in the bottom layer of the appetitive soul. To repent, put on sackcloth before the altar. In heaven, sackcloth is not an emblem of guilt or shame, but of full knowledge of law. It symbolizes your surrender to become the servant-instrument of all God’s Power, of your ability to sacrifice the last particle of self. So truly, sackcloth is a robe of glory. It represents the intestinal fortitude to dig down into the little self and face what you see. To say, “I don’t understand,” expresses the self that you are digging from the appetitive soul. The treadmill of the wheel of fate consists of this.
  Assume the full burden of lifting in your heart and before the altar, but without any self-blame. Cry if you must, but never try to hide it. Praise God day and night for the experience of being made perfect, whole, complete and beautiful. Use your God-given faculties for every experience—honor, loyalty, logic, reasoning, discernment, discrimination, and discretion. Follow law until the veils of illusion fall away.
  You may not use “I want” as an excuse for not following law. Never use your royal faculty of imagination purely for self-centered desires. Any excuse is the little me of the hidden self talking. No one on earth is so perfect as not to have any of the appetitive soul-little me-self. To believe so is considered as pride, intolerance, and arrogance. The “I can’t” is the “I won’t” that the subconscious mind presents. “I can’t understand” is “I won’t understand anything that doesn’t pander to my self-love, to my idea of my already-present perfection.” Do not say, “I can’t understand.” Instead, say, “I do understand that I am a child and beginning anew, knowing nothing each day. I do understand that my little self, the subconscious mind that has come up through evolution has hidden traits of all animal life, all racial-consciousness and memories of all evil of the past. It holds hidden inclinations of the opposite of every virtue. These must come up into conscious awareness and I must sublimate them again into the soul of God. I do understand that everyone has these traits.”
  The perfection of the Oversoul cannot lose or leave behind even a single negative thing. Scrape and dig until you have dug it all out and lifted it into the Light as a gift to God. As you do this, you must face yourself. You cannot say, “I can’t understand” to anything on earth because this admits your hidden negative tendencies of the self, which will work out as experience before the world, people, groups, etc., until you accept the law and dig them out. The Oversoul—the real you—does understand. This has nothing to do with the conscious mind’s goodness and virtue or the glory of the Oversoul’s pure delight in God. You can be a saint and still die of disobedience to law.
  Your attitude must be all love and all innocence. You may not honestly say, “I couldn’t be guilty of this because I am already so perfect.” Be just and of divine Wisdom on this now. Lift this pride of self. Do you think that you are made of something extra special, high and holier than all the rest? All my life I have lifted self by asking myself what made me do, act, speak, react, think or imagine what I did. Every word, every choice has a hidden reason plus a conscious one. Dig the self up, out and burn it in the fires of the soul. You do always understand. For when you do not, you are looking back and down into the hidden darkness of the little me, poor little imposed-on, misunderstood me.
  Never blame anyone or anything outside the self. When you hide self, it starts a fire smoldering under the surface that finally burns through all crusts. Yet you must declare, “I am perfect now,” to remind the self that this is so. It is one thing to declare that you are perfect but quite another to become so on earth. Let him who thinks he stands, take heed. If you have never thought you need warning and correction, it is pride in the self.—Edna Lister, November 1, 1944.

When you think you are being given a message, be certain to enter the silence from the golden Light at the Mercy Seat, holding onto no hidden thing that self may want to hear or say. To see perfectly requires that you check and recheck with God, alone, by yourself in the Light. Do you want to become a medium, who blithely writes or speaks, letting the ax fall where it may, not taking any responsibility for what happens, no matter how much you misuse Power?
  To serve the self will draw and quarter your physical body. Self-centered pride is a humiliation to soul and needs to be cast out. Let your love of God be your defense. When you tell another what you “know,” you challenge all principle to compel you to prove it. Never mention “poor little me.” Use all experiences and paymwnt of debts as a ladder on which to stand while reaching for the stars. All past knowledge is just enough to teach you that you do not know anything—use it as wisdom to reach, reach, reach.
  Do not lend yourself to so-called inspired writing until you can clearly see who is talking. You must know how to interpret exactly. Sometimes it takes asking for repetition in many different ways until you know what is meant, not just what the words sound like. I made a law for myself decades ago—I see or hear not one step farther than I can take my earth body and remain completely conscious of everything I do. So it took until my fiftieth year to know, to be sure that I was fully responsible for what I knew. I never spoke until I knew just where someone might misuse it and how to pay the resulting debt all by my lonesome self.
  Then it has taken nine years, since my birthday in 1935, to open all the Gates following the line of Light that I could faintly see as the messenger from the Supreme Father. I reached one realm, circle, or city after another until I can now look back from the full Source. Still, I have taken with me those who truly wanted to go. I am responsible for them, every step of the way. Thus, I have known no confusion, misunderstanding or loss except to free will in someone who would or could not take it, as you are now. Nine whole years to see and hear while fully conscious. Too slow? Not for me, even that poor little me, which had been so hurt, so alone, so anything anyone else had ever been—except one thing—knowing what full responsibility means.
  It is not enough to be good or joyous because you have bridged the abyss. You must know and be law. Be as great as you can be. Become law. Law, applied under love, cannot hurt or leave anyone out, cannot be blind to another’s needs. Law, under love, builds a gloriously strong and healthy body. It does not deplete or burn it or leave it weak, but glowing in beauty.

  No Master of Jesus the Christ’s Legions will exalt you or promise anything. They will give you law and point out the hard way by giving up the desires of the self. They will and do give truth. When you hear anything to exalt you or the self, watch out! It’s a test or a temptation. Get to the altar as a little child who has never been so glad of being safe.—Edna Lister, November 1, 1944.

Great-grandma said, “Least said—soonest mended.” You are accountable for every word now. You have decided to do it the best way, and not lend yourself to inspired writing until you see clearly who is talking and you know how to interpret exactly. Sometimes I have asked the speaker to repeat it a dozen different ways until I know what he means, not just what the words sound like. Some day, when we have finished this discussion, you can use these letters as lessons.

  When treating for another, circle him with Light and declare, “You are a true son or daughter of God. You are coming up in consciousness now.” Leave all else to God. For protection, declare, “No one who is sent of self can come nigh this dwelling, nor anyone in it, nor mine own household, nor myself, Thy servant. Only God’s Agents and Jesus the Christ may ever use me at any time as an oracle. Let God so make me a ready instrument under His Law, in due season.”
  Give others statements of truth. Ask them to pray with you. Say, “This is law,” or, “This is the way I seem to ‘get’ this.” You will be given, but for God’s sake, never involve any of God’s Agents again by naming him. Give God all the credit. God will credit the Agent He uses. Pray for your students. Lift them. Hold them. Teach them how to use the golden silence. But, forget your self. You are now the instrument of law. It takes a long time to clean up one small misuse of law. I’ve found that God knows His own best, and is quite capable of taking care of everything Himself, if I keep my self out of it. I just hold fast to God’s coattails and stay close to His heart. Then, He can and does bring such balance, such beauty, such glory, such marvels to pass, that it leaves me breathless.“…”
  Enter the golden silence from praise, honor, and love of God. Then, His Agents will use the time you set aside for this. If it is the same time daily it is best,but if any thing interferes, just be certain you do it. What you receive will always be of God—truth. Afterward, lay the open pages on the altar. Then read them over, to make certain you have heard rightly. If something in it sounds off or unlawful, ask for an explanation of interpretation, even if you have to rewrite the whole thing. Listen again. But it is up to you to see that you give only law! If you work any other way, you are placing yourself once more as a medium, not a mediator oracle. Sorry; this is Law. You must choose, then stick to it.
  You may not try to please anyone, no matter how much you love them. I can warn and outline this, but the choice is yours. Hold your people high, close, and firmly. Keep them working at law. Do not allow them to wander all over, pleasing themselves. You are the teacher of this class, under God. Instruct them repeatedly on this. Do not ask for guidance; rather, ask for mystic guardians to aid in your and their protection and for divine illumination. You cannot receive any higher than your own asking. This is law. Review in your mind, then state aloud what has been a pitfall in the past. Make it into a law, such as this: “Guard against pride, resentment, arrogance, self-exaltation, etc., lest it subtly creeps into my speech, or causes action such as (name an example) at unlawful times.” You need not state it exactly as above, but it must be clear enough to serve as the framework for a later Book of Warnings to Neophytes. [This website started as that book.] This aids you to become observant of illusions, self-delusions, and to speak truth on each thought, action, desire of self. The heavenly Sponsor whom you love and whose presence you feel most clearly will build your vibration until you learn to see and hear clearly—to write only when he says, “Write.” You are not a full mediator until you can give the messages by word of mouth perfectly. Therefore, closely watch your own feelings and reactions whenever you believe you are “under orders” for a message. When you feel your Sponsor is near, stop everything—enter the golden silence to check. You’ll soon build up your own definite knowing of either “No, it isn’t,” or “Yes, it is.” I am not able to tell you more by mail. Record all your reactions and we’ll discuss it fully when I’m with you.
  Meantime, keep writing and asking questions—it counts in your passing heavy initiations. There is no danger as long as you follow orders and stay well within the circle of Light the Father has placed around you. When you fully see and hear as well as “feel,” you will have reached the point of discrimination where you can protect yourself. Writing is the hardest thing in which to protect yourself. You may not write what you presume are messages until you have become law, all-seeing, all-hearing, all-wise. Be satisfied to go slowly and take no chances. When you hear and think you see or even feel, enter the silence before your altar and close eyes quietly—be certain you have completely surrendered, even nerves and muscles—then watch. Your heavenly Sponsor shall stand before you, and you will soon be able to see his form. In every prayer or silence, watch for our Lord Jesus. You will see him first as a Son of Man, meaning a form. Listen first for his voice. You will soon hear it.
  Write what you hear, or think you hear under these circumstances, in your own soul-book. Check by letter or in person with me [or a trained mediator]. Above all, follow the orders of maintaining golden silence. A mediator is a creator god, full-powered, and is only overshadowed, never possessed by an entity at any time. A creator god would not think to possess an embodied soul at anytime. You will remain conscious at all times when o’ershadowed in Spirit, knowing and hearing. Yet, you may not be able to recall what has been said when you return, any more than you could recall a telephone conversation if you were listening in on an extension while others spoke. You would need to have the Master open the records to you. Yet, as it continues, you must be fully conscious in your own person. Only so, can you keep "wanderers" of the low planes, out and away. I, too, am very often quite puzzled by orders given, but the Father does not explain to me why. When you really desire to give up all self, you can tell the difference between truth and illusion. Only then can you make the right choice at the very first test. When the self-desires blind you, you are really blind to the difference between truth and illusion. For illusion is always founded in a fact, which someone then distorts to fit a perversion of truth. People go off the deep end when they please themselves by taking the attitude that others should understand them. By telling half-truths, they too often brand themselves as liars because, in fact, they have been deceitful before God. God is very, very good to me to really justify my stand for truth. I know God. Unless you give up believing that you will find true and perfect love only on earth, you will never be able to feel, see, or know it in heaven. You must wipe out that past belief completely. You cannot give up something you never had. You have never had anything but an idea to give up. You were forced, by law, to work out and through the idea through experience in the physical world, in order to eliminate the idea and become ready to advance spiritually. The only way you can be used at first is through your own prayers. Your guardians sit with you—we call it o’ershadowing—waiting for you to pray. Until you grow used to their individual special feel or vibration, and see them, you can do nothing more.

  You were still thinking about self, not letting go. Until you forget self, forget the world or the inner, and see, think, feel only God-Light, until you speak only to God, of God, thanking Him that He is there, thanking the Master that he is there, and remaining in the Light in prayer, loving, loving, loving, how can you see or feel the Master using your body-vehicle? You cannot let go if you hold onto self and what self is doing. No one disappoints God by doing his best. The only way to disappoint Him is to think you could do it by doing your best! There is great rejoicing in the heavenly realms over your so-great surrender. The first and fundamental law of expression for the Elect is the pearl of great price: To ignore the truth of appearance and accept, surrender to, and declare the truth of reality. The first two chapters of the Book of Genesis reveal that the secret to perfect creations is prefacing your declaration with “Let,” and following it with the declaration of “This is good and very good.” To lift anything from one state to another, declare “This is good. Let there be Light.”
  Whatever it is, declare that it is good at the time for God to move in and clean it up, but is not good to continue. You must declare all your creations good. Also declare that the other fellow is right for where he is, according to his degree and kind. “This good. You are good right where you are.” Thus, you agree with the adversary, then remain still, without adding any more negative judgment or criticism. Apply this in your own life as God gives it to you. Why kick, why resent, why talk about it? Lift it onto a cloud continent of Light and leave it there.
  The way of the seer and prophet is to approach God through psychology, metaphysics, science, philosophy, and mysticism. Philosophy deals with God as principle, but mysticism considers God as personality. Thinking progresses from the creature stage to the creator by the processes of induction, which is the first process of any reasoning power, comparison, deduction, analysis, synthesis, imagination, the great creative faculty, intuition, illumination, and the Light of the golden silence. The majority of those who come to you in need of healing, occupy the first three stages of induction, comparison, and deduction, the self-pitying phase.
  Seven Degrees to transformation progress from self awareness to soul consciousness: The first three degrees, the Neophyte, Disciple, and Adept all practice varying degrees of self-control. The Mystic stands at the center point of balance, the fulcrum between self and soul. As a Mystic, you commune directly with God, needing no other intervening agency, creed or dogma. The final three degrees, the Master, Priest and Christos all deal with soul conquering through absolute responsibility, service and surrender of the self to the soul. You can make no trustworthy analysis until you pray. Before you can judge others or make a just appraisal, you must use Light for self-analysis first; otherwise, you clog your own channels of will and desire, of thinking, emotions and imagination. Agree with your adversary within and without, meaning the appetitive soul and subconscious mind, or the other fellow. Each degree has seven lesser degrees, making forty-nine in all. You earn ahead on the degrees, according to the fervency of your desires and prayers. Every word you utter, creates.
  You cannot simply talk about being a servant of the Almighty, but must do it. Service means devotion to the Master, not boasting. Ascension leads you to complete surrender to be used by the Power, with no thought of self. Impersonal prayer, which is of the soul, not the self, takes place in the silence. A medium deals with earth and its problems. He makes no vows of becoming or obedience to law. A mediator sees in symbols not of earth, and because of the inner grade of substance, uses her brain cells to hear, not her ears. An oracle is an o’ershadowed person through whom the Masters speak. An oracle is one whose vision and hearing expand beyond the physical range. You must see, hear and know about darkness to speak the Word and enable the legions of Light to lift it. It is part of our work, but no one can lift it alone, or dissolve it by hiding it in the outer. If you think that silence about what happens in the leader’s absence is loyalty to the leader, then you are not an able, loyal, honorable assistant who is without pride. Someday you’ll still have to learn to handle people without forgetting where loyalty lies. Leaders must share knowledge of the darkness, and pay debts outer and inner. To keep your own skirts and nose clean is nothing special. The quantity of love you thus release does not lift earth.
  Pride is so subtle. You are seeing on a joy vibration, but it is mostly your own earth-desires. Some will be good, but others will mislead you unless you seek advice every step of the way. Do not think, “I didn’t want to bother you or take your time,” which is nothing more than noble martyr stuff. Every time you really ascend, you forget, because you are so fascinated and enthralled by your own spiritual seeing and hearing. Interpretation is your stumbling block.
  I’ve always returned to the fundamentals of prayer and praise to make sure I wasn’t getting too pleased about it. You can’t lose by praying and loving God. Loyalty to God is the only loyalty worth considering. Do not pride yourself on holding your tongue in silence before men. Seek advice at all times. Better to seek too much than to wax in self-importance in your own eyes. Acceptance is not just prayer service and mighty vows, but depths of humility and ability to stand under blame and scorn, being responsible for everything about you. You must learn to conquer and drink self’s bitter cup. Since the 1930s, other metaphysicians have said that I give too much in my lectures, while they saved it up and stretched it out for additional classes. I always knew that every time I emptied my pitcher, God would add more. My choice has always been for the inner, not worldly success. I came to earth with no consciousness of my soul records, where I came from or why I was here.
  The challenge of evil has always been that the one who comes to teach truth must know nothing, their heavenly contact must be cut off completely. Yet we must still prove that we could return to heaven and return to earth. Although I did not know this, a line of Light was always moving up before me, and I followed it to the throne. I always saw it, and I could climb. I saw cities but did not know where they were. Finally I climbed to the throne of the Mercy Seat. I knew that when that line stopped, I would be at my Source.
  At age twelve I knew that “greater works than these shall ye do” included Transfiguration. I accepted Jesus the Christ as my Lord, and no other. I knew my only protection would be to shelter under his robe. We must ascend the body, because Gethsemane, Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension still lie ahead. Churches talk about “taking up the cross” without mentioning the Crucifixion. Metaphysicians talk about Resurrection. Jesus said that Ascension is the necessity, but people expect to do the greater works without ascending the body. On December 5, 1925, I decided I would believe nothing but what came from the Master’s lips. Since then, I have touched nothing but ascension.
  I started campaigning with Dr. Boyd January 9, 1927, and have never stopped submitting to inner initiation since. I could always see spiritually, and knew I was working for God at night. In October 1936, I prayed, “Please Father, open the Gates of Heaven. If no one else comes along, I will do it.” The Gates were opened for me because I obeyed and began to see and knew “under orders” that I had climbed. I prayed and sacrificed self and with each of my great soul experiences, I was enticed to remain at that level, but I had become accustomed to ascending in the Light.—Edna Lister, October 23, 1952.

To extend your vision above, think of some destination and extend your vision up to it. You dynamically do something by moving up in consciousness, which is a mental arrangement. You attain a point of seeing with the all-seeing eye, the imaginative faculty. You can turn the imagination faculty down or up. You waste 90 percent of the energy you create in your body by using your imaginative faculty for silly nonsense. When you extend it for good, you can accomplish anything.
  Read Dimnit’s The Art of Thinking, which is about abstract or picture thinking. You harness imagination and build a picture of what you plan; you must do this to see beyond the veil. For true soul vision, turn your mind’s-eye camera lens up to God. Pray yourself into the golden silence. How far does your vision extend? With extended vision you enter some infinite, eternal dimension. You have no sense of space or of time passing, you are there. You must arise, not be earth-bound. The length of time it takes is in accord with the degree of your burning desire. Seeing and hearing is a matter of practice. Focus your eyes on the Light. The less self-conscious you are, the farther you can see. You get tangled in confusing phenomena when you listen for something.—Edna Lister, December 4, 1952.

The lights that enfold you, as your aura, will strike and explode as Light at each misuse of tone and color by you or whoever is near you. You must watch for this and learn to distinguish the difference—a signal flash for conquering and the illumination explosion, which means a new mystery unfolded or an ascension of vision—watch closely. Thus, you start your inner training on colors and tones. Check watchfully every step of the way, for your work will deal largely with tone. Not only does each vocal sound deal with tone, but also each action has tone and sets the quality of a vibration. Your lessons are mathematically precise.
  As you strive to remain in the arms of Light, the love moving through you will increase. The beauty moving forth to enfold all whom you meet will increase. Love will reach out, using you as its arms, to cover the transgressions of others, instantly to retract negative words, yours and others’, which would create and grow. Your love for God will use you to heal others, and keep you lifted. Love will hold you in Light bonds of glory for its own purposes, the purpose of creating only Light. You shall love enough to loose the bonds of hate from others. You shall praise enough to create glories for your loved ones. Balance in seeking, seeing, hearing, and interpretation is a delicate ability, easily lost if desire slips unconsciously into a pride-of-self desire to do it all alone. Full responsibility in applying law and obedience to vows is glorious. Still, please continue to check with me on interpretation. You hear with your ears, but must listen to God with your brain cells open. You are in training for places where no mistakes or blunders are permissible, so you must be able to hear God’s answer the first time in less than a second, for thought travels faster than the speed of light to impress your brain cells. Hearing mystically is not hard, but the training to focus yourself—every vital center, every brain cell, every gland as one—totally in one direction faster than light is difficult. The soul training, rigid and constant, must be self-training in this age for none of us live in an ivory tower; if nothing interfered, a few days would suffice to polish your hearing, but your interpretation would be off 90 percent of the time because self still claims hours of your attention.
  The training must be even more rigid now, for it is necessary to balance earth experience with heavenly illumination. We call this “tying earth to thy heaven,” lifting it into heaven, not dragging heaven down to touch it. All past training has been for this one point in time. Some souls hold the mundane idea that eyes are merely physical. The eyes you see with are made of pure soul substance, and the soul does the seeing, not the eyes. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah? And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

And the Lord said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria: And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room. And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay. Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.—1 Kings 19:9-18.

Elijah’s Mantle of Prophecy Falls on Elisha: And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel. And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho. And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the Lord hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.

And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan. And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground. And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so. And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces. He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan; and he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over. And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.—2 Kings 2:1-15.

Elisha and the Chariots of Fire: Then the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp. And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are come down. And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and saved himself there, not once nor twice.

Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel? And one of his servants said, None, my Lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber. And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan. Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about.

And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.—2 Kings 6:8-17.
