Spiritual Separation
Sandra Gustavson, March 10, 2014, Cleveland, Ohio
The single most important thing I ever learned from Edna Lister is that there is no such thing as God and self; there is no such thing as God and anything or anyone. The idea of anything being separate from God is a dogma foisted upon us throughout countless incarnations, and it is a difficult Truth to grasp until one has been actively seeking that Oneness and is ready to accept it.
I remember going over this through the years with different teachers. I thought I understood it, but in my reality, God was in His heaven and here I was, sinning away here on earth.
I pictured myself as some little appendage of God, ‘way at the end of His fingertip, and thought I could only be One with Him if I were very, very pure (which didn’t seem very likely.) Besides — He had other, bigger fish to fry, so where exactly did I stand in the grand scheme of things?
It began with understanding that God isn't the “Grand Old Man with the Long White Beard” I’d been led to believe, but pure Light expressing as both personality and principle. If God is infinite, then He fills all Creation; there is no place God is not, thus the statement, “God (Light) is everywhere, evenly present.”
This is all well and good, but do you mean to tell me that God is in my coffee table, that pesky fly buzzing around my head, those tanks rolling through Afghanistan, that fish swimming along, minding its own business and about to be eaten by something bigger than it? I could understand God being “in” a glorious sunset, the majesty of mountains and the multi-colored and scented splendor of a garden, but all those nasty little things, too?
“God (Light) is everywhere, evenly present.”
Okay, okay; I think I get it (finally). But, wait! Does that mean God is in me, too?
“God (Light) is everywhere, evenly present.”
If God is in me, does that mean I’m not that little wart at the end of His Finger after all? Then what does it mean? Suddenly I remembered that I was composed of Light. But what about my soul?
“God (Light) is everywhere, evenly present.”
If God is pure Light expressing as personality, God is expressing as me! And I finally did get it. God expresses as every person, every thing in His Creation. God as the One Mind, God as abundance, God as health, God as Love, God as All That Is expressing as me, as each one of his children. And because of that we are all tied together in this One Mind, magnifying the Power we can release in our service to the Light.
Suddenly, all the truths I had ever learned fell into their proper places. I finally understood the concept of “I AM.”
I thought of all the things I had prayed for through the years, not realizing that I already had them, waiting to manifest—God expressing as my house, God expressing as food to nourish my body temple, God expressing as my perfect health. Since God is infinite, I already have all that God is in infinite supply.
Isn’t God Good!
