Body, Mind and Soul, the Human Spectrum

Early in her life's work as a minister, lecturer, teacher and writer, Edna Lister categorized the embodied soul (as man and woman) in a field of study that she called spectrology, which is the science of spectrum analysis. Using a highly integrated approach, she combined the diverse elements of man's nature and being — body, mind and soul — coordinating them into a whole concept, a world view.

The most intellectually formative elements in Edna Lister's life flow from three directions: The Holy Bible (King James Version), the works of Plato, the master philosopher, and from her own moral compass, which by her constant nurturing and use of it, informed her of the good, the true and the beautiful nature of God and His rule in her life as Truth and the only dependable Reality.

We study God as both personality and principle

As we walk the Via Christa, we study God as both personality and principle. Personality is the outer expression of the indwelling living soul, the individualized expression, the individuated manifestation of God. Personality is what the world can see of the soul. Principle is the absolute, unchangeable, undeviating, immutable foundation upon which all universes are based and established.

The absolute principles of Wisdom, Love and the Logos, and the relative principles of Mind, Substance and Power operate through five categories of expression, which we know as mysticism, philosophy, science, metaphysics and psychology. These categories of expression form sectors in the human spectrum, serving as an invaluable aid in helping us to discern the truth of appearances versus the truth of reality and to discriminate the differences between their affects and effects in our lives.

By honing the mental faculties of logic, reason, discernment, discrimination and discretion, which Edna Lister said are essential, you can begin to discern the illusions created by culture and education. The most powerful of these illusions are sense-based beliefs that you are a body and perhaps have a soul; you are separate from God as He is separate from His Creation; you are inherently sinful and inclined to do evil. Nothing could be further from the truth.

You are inherently good, because you are made in the image and likeness of your Creator, and He is all good. You are immortal as a soul because you are made of God's substance, and are therefore eternally a part of Him, inseparable. As a soul you have several bodies that are useful to you in varying states of matter — cellular, molecular, atomic, electronic and other subatomic particle forms.

You are so much more than a body at the mercy of hormones and neurotransmitters

Your mind operates in three basic ways — subconscious, conscious and super-conscious — serving you, the living soul, by operating through your soul's corresponding appetitive, rational and Oversoul functions. You may partake of the mind that was in Christ Jesus in the degree to which you are willing to sacrifice selfish hedonistic expressions.

You are so much more than a body at the mercy of hormones and neurotransmitters. True, you exist as a body within the human spectrum at this level, but you are really full-spectrum within the electromagnetic spectrum. You are Light, color, tone, number and the form by which you are named.

Body: The body is "the physical or material frame or structure of man, the whole material organism viewed as an organic entity; the physical and mortal aspect of a person as opposed to the soul or spirit." The body expresses your personal law of being, rooted in the principle of substance. The body is your relative expression of the principle of form. You are not your body. You are a soul, who has a body. If you follow your soul's desire, you will take your body along. You build the body not only with air, water, food exercise and rest, but with every thought, emotion, choice, word and action. In other words, the body expresses every "I," "me" and "my" statement you speak. You wear your thoughts and emotions in your outer form.

Mind: The world defines mind as "the human consciousness that originates in the brain and is manifested especially in thought, perception, emotion, will, memory, and imagination; the collective conscious and unconscious processes in a sentient organism that direct and influence mental and physical behavior; the principle of intelligence, the spirit of consciousness regarded as an aspect of reality; the faculty of thinking, reasoning, and applying knowledge; individual consciousness, memory, or recollection." Mind is the Power, the Substance the purpose, the plan, and the law, which becomes the material universe with its phenomena. Mind is your direct personal connection with God.

Soul is "the animating and vital principle in human beings, credited with the faculties of thought, action, and emotion and often conceived as an immaterial being; the spiritual nature of human beings, regarded as immortal, separable from the body at death, and susceptible to happiness or misery in a future state." The soul, often called the living soul, is our individuated ground of being. The soul is a portion of the divine Mind, which God condenses as life sparks of Substance and animates (Power) by breathing it into a physical form as a vehicle of expression, what we call an individual.
